A30 Cornwall questions

Hi. I am planning a drive down to Newquay from North Wales on August 3rd for a week just have a few questions.
Is this road dual carriageway for its entire route? Does it get busy in the summer? If it does ill go at night. Loads of police? Anyone who can fill me in will be greatly appreciated.

There will be more police out during the summer months, as there is a lot more traffic on it, but over all there is minimal police presence.

It's dualie Exeter - Bodmin, where it becomes single.

It's rammed during the day from the middle of June/July time till the middle of Sept.

Travel down later at night if you can.

Not that busy tbh mate, dual carriageway pretty much all the way (Including by Bodmin - New road etc). Not many Police that I have ever noticed. More caravans etc during the holiday season but again no problems. I would advise that you take the turn off at Victoria and take the back way into Newquay by the airport (St Columb) as the other main route can get a little busy because its a narrow, twisty road.

Thanks. Just realised its a 400 mile drive down from Bangor. Tempted to use the train. Also the issue of parking when I get down. Decisions.

I only go as far as into Cornwall as Launceston these days...maybe Lewanick now and then. :p

Cool, its changed quite a lot in the last year and a half. Very nice roads all the way down now. Goes into a single carriage way from Truro onwards IIRC. I live in Bodmin and sometimes take the old A30 into Newquay on my Quad :)

Not any more mate, its dual all the way through now ;)

not quite, still single for a few miles over Bodmin moor.

Travel down as late as possible and you shouldn't encounter any problems, pretty fast stretch of road and traveling into Cornwall there aren't any speed cameras

Might get busy around towns/cities but apart from that it's not bad at all.

Police presence is pretty minimal as well, just keep an eye on any bridges over it and you'll be fine.

Sometimes a crafty bugger that sits right on top on the Moors as you drop down into Bodmin just near the flyover on the left :p

Ah of course yes, over the top of the Moors. I wasn't thinking in the direction :p

I also would be careful at the Roadford Lake turn off on the A30, they like to sit behind the sign so as you come down the hill they can gun you doing lots and then give chase after the flyover.

Luckily for me I come off there. :D

I traveled down there a few weekends ago, and had a nice clear run, even had a nice butty not far from Bodmin :D shouldn't have too much of a problem, the majority is dual carriageway

During offpeak times it is fine.

During the summer months it's the main road into Cornwall, and thousands travel down for the sun and surf. The fact the Bodmin section is open means it should be better than it used to be, but still, afternoon is murder getting into Cornwall, and is the morning is murder getting out. Due to all the holiday lets.

Used to drive down the A30 a lot for work.

Not a bad run and mostly dual carriageway. The place I would most often get caught in a jam was called Indian Queens - esp in the summer. The road is single carriageway there and a bit of a bottle neck. That time of year it's worth travelling early or late in the day.

Also got caught speeding on that road once - not sure the name of the place but there is a big long hill and the police sit in a lay-by at the top. This is coming back out of Cornwall.

The Indian Queens road is the twisty road I was referring to above, its a pita in the summer but you can turn off the A30 at Victoria and go the back way into Newquay (You go by the Airport) that avoids this road. I don't even bother with the Indian Queens road any more. Lorries and static Holiday homes being transported can grind the traffic to a halt.

On the A30, Indian Queens is now bypassed entirely which makes things a lot easier.
AtlanticP - I'm a bit confoozed about which way you're talking about? Do you mean come off the A30 going up the hill (where the old dual carriageway used to start/end), going down that little bit of dual carriageway and then turning right instead of left at that roundabout by St Columb Road?

Think that's it, travelling south along the A30 you will pass a turn off on the right for Victoria. Follow this over the A30 flow over then go towards St Column Major, go straight across the big round about then stay on that road it takes you by the runway etc and it will bring you straight onto the outer Newquay ring road near Quikfit etc.
