How much will they give back?

It's all just a media frenzy over nothing very much as always. I'd LOVE the telegraph to investigate the BBC's use of expenses and watch the BBC news for that day with the shoe on the other foot. No doubt they're not clean either and are funded by public money.

If we were talking about £1000s each time then fair enough, but bringing up amounts like dog food, etc is so extremely trivial I'm suprised the public are lapping it up.

Perhaps the public "are lapping it up" because they don't want to see their taxes used to pay for things like dog food. Why can't the MP buy the stuff using the the rather sizeable wage they earn?

Wouldnt it be lovely to have enough in the bank such as these MP's do, to just be able to write out a cheque for many thousands of pounds just like that.
13k for Hazel Blears was it? Thats like 8 months wages for me. Yet she has that money available to just pay back. Its disgusting.

Indeed, if they have enough money in their accounts to just write a cheque for 13+k, do they even need any expenses?

Not quite the same though, you have a choice whether or not to spend your earnings on what the BBC sells (this isn't a great example, the licence fee is hard to avoid and very unfair), but the point is - if private enterprise employees claim unjustified expenses, it is only the company profits that suffer - the end consumer still has a choice about pumping money into those companies. With the government we have no choice, they take tax money and spend it however they want, without any obligation to provide a good level of service, because their 'customers' are bound by law to keep 'buying'.

Just make expenses public.

Already happened, that's how all of this got into the public eye in the first place. I think it was a campaign run by the Daily Mail, at least in part.

It was the Telegraph.

Cameron has seized the initiative and completely wrong-footed Brown on this one. Now the PM simply looks weak and indecisive.

I would like this investigation into expenses to go all the way down to local counscillors as i'm sure the whole line of goverment in this country has it's noses in the trove.

Bet your ass they are.

I delivered into NKCC offices a couple of years ago when I walked past an office where a woman was saying:

"look, all the councilors are going to be in a bad mood at the minute because they are only getting a 50% bonus this christmas, thats because we are surprising them all with brand new cars before they break up"

We should all ask for our council tax to be re calculated. Why the HELL i am paying for MP's 2nd homes and god knows what I don't know!

Drives me to the bone this does. Stupid world we live in these days. They have the cheek to claim for such stupid things. God damn you, you do not need 2nd homes, Commute you lazy sods. If you don't like it. Tough, find another job.

I agree but then if they didn't have the expenses the basic wage is no way high enough. If that wage was all there was to offer no one would do it at all with any reasonable intelligence and the MPs we have would be worse than the ones we have now.

Depends on if you only want the independantly wealthy being MPs.

Nonsense. If they want more money, MPs are perfectly capable of acquiring second incomes - and many of them do.

Support is growing among ministers for curbs on the traditional right of MPs to top up their £61,000-a-year salary with outside earnings after it emerged that 66 per cent of Tory MPs, 37 per cent of Liberal Democrats but only 19 per cent of Labour MPs have other jobs.

(Source).

That was from July 2008, but I doubt much has changed since then.

I get paid in cash and i dont put ANY of my savings into my bank account so they cant steal my money.

Its dodgy that if someone was to break into my house they would find over 200,000 in cash lol

I agree with Mr Fry that we should be more concerned with the other stuff that they get wrong ..... like getting us into wars on false pretenses ...... never mind a few grand, how about all the bodies?

I also agree that we should be looking for what is happening elsewhere, as sure as hell, there will be something unsavoury being done whilst we're all focused on this trivia.

It's not trivia; it's fraud and corruption. These are prosecutable offences which carry potential jail sentences.
