Hey folks,

Looking for some advice please.

My current rig is as follows:

Q6600 @ 3.4GHz
Gigabyte P35C Mobo
4GB RAM
OCZ Vertex 60GB
2x 1TB Samsung F1's
LG BluRay Burner
M-Audio Delta 2496
8800GT 512mb

I've been using XP Home on it since I bought it with the following software I use:

Sony Vegas Pro 8
Photoshop CS3
FL Studio 7
Audition 1.5
Counterstrike Source
Office 2003 (no need for anything bigger really)

The SSD I just bought recently and havent installed yet and instead of installing my legit copy of XP Home on it again which is of course 32bit I was wondering if it would be wise to install W7's RC but in 64bit or if I should stick with XP or even W7 32bit.

Many thanks for your help,

Rik

Will my software all work ok with it or will I run into issues?

I wouldn't run W7 as a main OS.. Stick with XP and create a seperate partition for W7.. You can then have a play, get familiar and get to know any issues before it's official release. When you are happy with it, then you can stick to the one OS.

Whether you want to risk 7 or not is up to you, but I would say that that system is wasted running 32-bit XP!

Well, when I bought it over a year and a half ago the consensus was that the software I was using wasnt 100% on a 64bit OS :(

Going by the list I put up, is this now the case that everything is tickety boo and will run fine on a 64bit OS?

This again. Stick Windows 7 on and have a play. It's a great O/S. Live a little ;) Running here x64 no problems. Won't even consider going back to Vista let alone XP (what is XP Btw?;))

You can run 32 bit programmes on a 64bit O/S and you also have a very good compatibility mode for any glitchy programmes. I haven't got one programme or game that wont play on Windows 7 x64. :)

You guys are convincing me :)

My only niggle is that I do rely on the system for my work (freelance video production) so if it went ****up I'd be in the poo.

But if you guys are doing ok with it then that means it must be fairly bomb proof

I always run with a back up HD and if things are crucial too me I back them up on disc/pen drive also (whatever OS I was running;))

Install it and enjoy :)

Ok dokey.

Unless someone chimes in at the 11th hour I'll get this Vertex 7'd up next week :)

Thanks for the help and advice folks,

Rik

This is good advice. Stick with XP as your main OS and stick Windows 7 64 bit on it as a Dual Boot.

I would also second the advice to dual boot. There is no way I'd risk a critical machine with pre-release software. I have W7 on my home desktop and laptop (both dual booting with Vista x64 too) and it's great, but there is no way I would put it on a machine that I couldn't live without for a few days (for this reason the wife's laptop will not be getting W7 until it's been out for a few months).

ive been running W7 since v7000 and never had a problem. Its been my main Work PC and home PC....

W7 = win

Your audio card will give you trouble with Windows 7. As far as I know it'll install under Vista compatibility and will play audio just fine, but will cause your system to hang when you try to shut down and wont give you midi support. I haven't even tried recording yet so I don't know about line in etc.

I don't have time to find the link, but if you look on the m-audio forums, someones made a script that automatically disables the card whenever you go to shutdown or restart the computer. This stops it from hanging and is working 100% for me. You'll be able to find out on the forums about the status of midi recording and the like too.

M-Audio are an absolute joke with drivers. I would have moved to an x64 operating system 3 years ago if it hadn't taken them so long to get drivers out.

Needless to say I won't be buying any of their products ever again.

Yes!

When I bought my current rig I moved my 2496 from the previous AMD system. The driver release for the card a year and a half ago had a nasty bug too where it would set the buffer to 256 bytes or something chronic giving clipping and clicks all over the place. Youd have to change it manually every reboot.

***** tard the lot of them - if their hardware wasnt so good I would have swapped out for something else a long time ago.

Ok dokey. Popped W7 on my new OCZ drive.

First time I installed it bombed with a file couldnt be found error so I reburned the ISO of RC1 and it went in that time fine.

Problem is, when Windows 7 loads up it crawls. Eg: typing into the address bar of IE takes about 5 seconds to show what you've typed. Start menu takes 6 seconds to load up etc etc.

Thought Id maybe moved something inside the case when I was mucking about so rebooted into XP and rendered out some H264 stuff and it was fine - full speed :S

Any ideas on this one folks?

Thanks,

Rik
