Do I ditch my GTX 260 for a 4870x2?

My system is an ABIT IP35 Pro with 8GB ram and a Q6600 and I am tempted by the £250 4870x2 ... I currently have a GTX 260 that I got in December last year which I bought to service my 1920x1080 monitor.

Q: Should I get it :D ?

GTX260 = 4870
4870x2 = 4870 + 4870

thus, 4870x2 > GTX260

Simple maths my friend! :D

EDIT: I lol'ed at my own stupidity hahaha... :p

I'm sooooooo tempted by this offer, I really don't need it, the GTX280 is more than enough, but look at the shiny shiny :D

I'm happy with my GTX280, I need a new CPU before anything else now.

A 'very noticeable' improvement isn't really enough for me to be tempted.

- 20-60 fps gain @ 1920x1080+ comparing to a GTX260
- £250

A 'very noticeable' improvement isn't really enough for me to be tempted.

:confused: You ok mate?

Oh and you got the GTX280. that's 10-15fps more than a GTX260.

:p

The ddr5 memory makes a difference though. If you are happy with the performance you get at the moment then maybe spend the money on some other part of your system.

I have gone from a 4870X2 -> 4850 -> GTX285. The X2 was the worst of the bunch in my opinion. I game at 1920x1200 btw.

While your framerates will be numerically higher the actual smoothness of the games will go down! Seriously!!!

I couldn't believe the difference going from my X2 to a single 4850. Although the FPS was slower the games were a lot more responsive due to lack of micro-stutter. I don't care what anybody says micro-stutter IS an issue for this card. Just look on Rage3d, they proved it is an inherent problem within multi-gpu solutions. The X2 has it particularly bad.

Also, the framerates were SO inconsistent. Don't get me wrong - on the games which my X2 did kick in it was great. Notably, UT3, Grid and Oblivion. But these are the only 3. I am over the moon with my GTX285. It delivers 80% of the frames of the X2 whilst giving me NO micro-stutter.

Although do remember that some people notice it and some people don't. I would strongly recommend finding a mate who has one or someone on here who lives near you so you can check it out first to see whether you personally will be annoyed by it.

Eventually micro-stutter lead me to sell my X2..ah man I WANTED to love that card so much :( :(

The Nvidia cards don't seem to suffer from having DDR3.

Different tech, as is some of the other numbers like shaders iirc.

...but yes, it works well.

Nothing cryptic meant but its puzzling how some people get microstutter and get choppy frame rates and others don't. I don't really get it. Never had a stutter, well my X2 hasn't, lol. Though I would love to try out an nvidia card to see if the minimum frame rates are any better, apparently they are, whether I'd notice I don't know.

No micro stutter here and if it was happening i would notice as i am very picky also don't have a problem with minimum framerates though i know some people do. Personally i would wait till the next gen if you have one of the current gen cards while you wouold see a noticable improvement with an X2 over a 260 you'll see a bigger improvement by waiting a few months and getting more for the money you'll spend. I love my X2 but i know some people for whatever reason have problems with them and some of those issues are being resolved apparently by Ati with the next cards so keep your 260 use the extra time to save the extra money and then get yourself a real upgrade :).
