Voting? We should take a lesson of Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell said:
At 11 o’clock in the morning of 20 April 1653, Cromwell led a company of musketeers to Westminster. Having secured the approaches to the House, he addressed the Members in a speech about corruption that is worth repeating in the light of events three and half centuries later:

“..It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes, have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d; your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse the Augean Stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings, and which by God’s help and the strength He has given me, I now come to do.

I command ye, therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors. You have sat here too long for the good you do. In the name of God, go!”

At Cromwell’s signal, Lieutenant-Colonel Worsley marched in with the musketeers to drive out the MPs. The doors were sealed and a wit pinned up a notice outside reading: “This House is to be let: now unfurnished.”

I just thought I'd quote the BNP supporters to see how many there were. These forums are (and always have been) hilariously right-wing, but the sheer number of people willing to support a blatantly racist party is staggering.

Totally agree with you. It actually sickens me that people still vote for them. Unbelievable the amount of people on here who are voting for them, really am surprised at a lot of people here.

I response to the N.I voters, i too will probably be going either Alliance, SDLP or UUP. More than likely Alliance since i done an interview with a few of their MLA's. They seemed pretty cool :p

I'm voting BNP if i actually bother to vote and that's because they're the only ones who've bothered to post a leaflet through my door.
I got one of those too. I imagine who appears on the front of said leaflet is either beyond you or you just don't care. In either case, shame on you. Using Winston Churchill to peddle BNP's racist views (however much they want to deny or disguise them) really isn't on. I'd rather vote for the Monster Raving Loony party than I would the BNP.

Haha! So that "New World Order" comment was spotted. I did wonder how long that would take when he said it. :)

It will be Conservative for me but i need to read up on their policies again to know what Im voting for!

On another note: I really like the American system and I wish we had it here. Maximum of two 4-yr terms and then you are out.

i'll vote for whoever has the lowest income tax but best public services. only two that affect me day in/day out. recently the govt has done nothing but make life difficult but the nhs has been brilliant so i don't want all public services to suffer but for all i care we can scrap buses and trains.

I find myself having very little choice.
Despite being 100% against them going to war, I still will be voting Labour.

I remember what a distgusting mess the tories made of this country and the optimism I had when Tony Blair came to power and all the "things can only get better" stuff (god I hate that song!). Well I had hoped for a lot more than what has happened since, but things have got better.

I don't think the recent recession would have been avoided whoever was in power. So I don't blame Labour for that.

How the main parties deal with this disgraceful expenses row may yet have an impact though.

And to anyone voting BNP to get back at the main parties. You should be ashamed of yourself.

History repeats itself: the last 12 years of ZanuLabour have seen this country go round the u-bend quicker than last nights madras, and with an equal amount of eye-watering stinging.
Anyone but Labour. Lies, Lies and yet more Lies and gravy-boating.

It's about time we had a 'none of the above' or no-confidence option on our ballot papers - it'd stop hollow, grabbing gits like Blair declaring a 'landslide victory for labour' when less than half of the electorate actually turned out to vote. Failing that it might encourage politicians to start working for the interests of the people who elected them - but I guess that's why they are politicians and not statesmen.

Labour = spending all the reserve funds on complete and utter crap, increases taxes as a result. Council benefit scum thrives. And on top of all that, Gordon Brown puts that ******* **** Jacqui Smith in charge.

I'm sorry, but if you vote Labour, you are ******* retarded.
