The Samsung OmniaHD i8910 ... this NEEDS it's own thread.

The OmniaHD use a 3.7" capacitive screen. It makes the world of difference. Samsung's modifications to the UI are pretty cool too.

I know what is uses, I made the thread and huinted the specs for gawds sake... however it's the Symbian UI itself that is my complaint... after a few months it's REALLY irritating me.

Its definitely a tough one but I guess you could try it out in the shop before you buy if they have them in stock of coarse.

Its easy to be fascinated and bemused by specifications but from what I found with the omnia, Samsung are not too great with supporting their phones after releasing them, and thats where the issues lie. I am sure if Samsung really wanted to they could put a bit more effort in and build firmware and software that makes the omnia great and comparable to the iPhone, but they just seem to be making new phones at an extraordinary rate and forget about the old ones. So you have to then do things yourself and read lots on XDA forums and fiddle about intensely with your phone. I imagine it will be the exact same with the omnia but a bit worse as at least windows mobile is a bit easier to use than symbian (I absolutely hated all this "signing" stuff that we had to do to software to get it to work on the n95!).

Stick to the iPhone for now until Symbian undergoes a radical UI change, it is quite simply a complete pain in the arse to use on a daily basis. Maybe a hardware keyboard a la N97 will help this, but touch-only is a nightmare, and you rely on the stylus much more than I thought you would. Also my 5800 touch-screen is less than accurate.

All the iPhone needs is a better cam with 640*480 video recording, more memory, and a removable battery... and there would be nothing else to touch it in overall terms. However the sublime UI does make up for its critical lack of hardware/software features, and once OS 3.0 is released Apple will finally have caught up for the most part in terms of features.

Wow, I never thought i'd hear myself say it... :(

Ok thanks for that info Richdog m8. When you said touch-only is a nightmare -is that because of the hardware constraints of the 5800s screen or a Symbian quirk?

If you're finding Symbian a pain-in-the-butt and not just the '5800 screen' and if they don't bring out a sufficiently upgraded iPhone what phone/os will you change to?

EDIT : You did a ninja post - so I guess that answers it. Can you elaborate on the Symbian os that you really don't like?
:)

The 5800 touch-only screen IS a pita (it's inaccurate, and not the most responsive), but it is a seperate issue to the Symbian UI annoyances. The more I use it the more i'm of the mind that it belongs on a phone of around 5 years ago, not a "next-gen" touchscreen only phone... in fact i'd say that as an OS it is completely unsuited to being a touch-only solution. The N97 hardware will help massively with making it easier to use I think. But when you think how much Symbian UI has changed since the N73... well... the answer is not much at all. The Apple UI was designed from the ground up to be a next-gen UI (regardless of how much the iPhone hardware sucks in some respects) whereas symbian has been taken from gen to gen and simply tweaked a bit for the new hardware. Hell, even Android fits the bill as a "next-gen UI" and has as much if not more potential than Apple when it hits it's stride.

Symbian is in a sorry state UI-wise compared to the competition imo... and as someone who has loved it for a LONG time and regards it as one of the most "free" (apps, apps apps) and technically flexible OS's around, that's a hard thing for me to say. Is the i890 had of had Android, or a version was released with Android, I think that really would make this phone. The i8910 hardware is way in advance of the Symbian OS... it's wasted on it imo.

Give me an hour or so with it and ill put up a review on what I think, dont expect anything indepth but just a general overview of the menus performance etc...

I'm tempted by this phone or an Iphone. But the UI is putting me off. Not much good having a great camera and video recorder if the UI is just going to annoy me.

Personally me, I love the UI of S60 (although I didnt try 5th Edition yet)
I think it just needs getting used to, I remember myself first time on a nokia 6680 with Symbian.

But you can choose whatever you like best.

and Dave1985, please post screens, what comes in the box and stuff, please
Thanks

Been into town here today, was offered a pretty good contract actually.

Orange had some in stock but wanted £80 on a £45 per month, for 2 years contract! Phones for you offered it for free on the same price contract, with more minutes and free internet aswell, aswell as £70 for my current phone as cashback.

Would have taken it if they had any in stock.

Anyway, for the good news, I went back into orange to have a play around with one, and I can say it's very nice, the UI is very quick, much quicker then the LG Arena for example. I was worried about the size and weight of the phone, but I can hold it in one hand and still be able to type on the on-screen keypad without any trouble, and I have rather small hands.
The screen, simply put, is amazing, very good colours, contrast is great, the responsiveness of the capacitive touchscreen is also very, very impressive compared to any other phones I've used.
The photos taken look amazing on screen, but obviously I didn't get a chance to take a look on a computer. Unfortunatly I didn't get a chance to check the sound quality on videos, but I'm sure someone else can help out with that.

Hope this helps someone :)

Cheers for the update DAnDan.
Think i'm going to go for it....mobiles.co.uk have some alright offers on it at the moment but i'm going to call orange direct in the morning and see what i can get or try and upgrade to it as i'm now out of contract.

Hoping i can get a £35-£40 contract with WAP for £80 phone.

Has anyone else got it or pre-ordered one now?

This phone does look good, but i think i'll have to play with one in a shop to see what the ui is like. There's a part of my mind that's telling me the iphone will be much nicer to use.

After playing with a few peoples iPhones I decided a while back that it may be a long time before anyone releases anything that is as good to use, it's just that the tech in the iPhone is so far behind other offerings it makes it just too much to overlook.
