18 soon what car ?

Or, alternatively, if you are going into the forces and will hardly ever drive the car...get your dad to add you to his insurance and drive his car when you are about.

You're not going to keep your first car for 7 years, fact.

If you buy a fast car, you will crash it, fact.

There's a good reason most people get a small hatchback as a first car, and thats exactly what you need to do.

Get yourself a decent Fiesta for 5k and shop about to insure it properly. Putting your parents on as additional drivers on your policy can reduce it very well
yeh before you said this i was thinking about a decent fiesta whats generally the better one the st or the ztec s ?

18yrs old + rear engined + rear wheel drive = Crash......FACT

Get yourself a normal cheap front wheel drive car for the first year or so, build up your NCB and then maybe work towards a better car.

If you think you are going to keep the car for 7+ years then ask around the forum and find out how many still have their first car after the first 3 years and that wouldn't change it for something else.

The focus suggestion has been the most reasonable IMO.

The Mk 1's are great to drive for what they are, and the 1.9 tdci is very reasonable to insure (at least it was for me when I was 18 3 yrs ago). It's a well paced car to learn in with a very exploitable chasis. The diesel is nice and torquey and revs freely though its (limited!) rev range.

Fiesta is also a good idea, however the focus is a much better drive IMO.

And for Gods sake don't buy a widowmaker as a first car :p

not bad eh ?

Fiesta ST is only group 13. Easily achievable with one year NCB and pass plus depending on area. You can either spend 7k on a 1.25 and hate each of your many years in it or you can buy a cheap runabout for a wear then get an ST which is a great little car with room for modification for extra power. It's your choice really.

It has to be REALLY immaculate to command that money. It's a little over the odds. The Zetec S is only a group 6 car and is actually now less to insure than my 1.4 when it comes to renewal time.

I'd say the car is reasonable but you'd be mad to pay this much for insurance!

Im gonna be paying 2k+ for a really bad car so i might aswell fork out the other 800 quid its only a weeks wage every month or 50 quid a week. what some people dont get is in the army ill have 3 things to pay for. petrol, insurance, beer. I can spend all my money every month and still have a warm bed and food guaranteed. so it gives me £70 on petrol £50 on insurance and £80 quid for nights out and then still ill have a few pennies spare to go in the bank. on the top of that i get a gun and a free holiday to Afganistan.

and a free holiday to Afganistan.

Not what a friend who served out there called it...doesn't like to talk about it :(

Dude, don't spend that much on insurance, get something cheaper and at least get one years no claims, one year older and a load more money in the bank. Then buy something decent.
