LED Lenser are pretty good (I have the V2 aviator which is good), otherwise look at the Fenix range. The Fenix I have is super bright, and brilliant for dark places that you need to see well in, it does have quite a directional bean though.

EDIT: What about the TK40? Over 600 lumens! http://www.fenixtorch.co.uk/led_torches/fenix_tk40.html and big enough to crack heads with as well by the looks of it (not that you would need that with any of the Fenix torches in full power mode.

Momentary blindness > cracked skull. :p

No offence, but with Maglites biggest isn't always best - the 6D is HUGE and pretty heavy, the 3D is more than sufficient for bonking people on the head/arm/leg and the batteries last ages.

Edit: http://www.pagesdiy.com/acatalog/Maglite_3D_Cell_Torch.html - £23 for the LED 3D Maglite at the bottom of the page.

Here's my latest torch, unfortunately not big enough for self defense.
Rated at 900 lumens but in reality about 600 lumens, uses a Seoul SSC P7-D LED.
Just over £20, uses a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, more of a flood type beam than a thrower, 5 modes Hi-mid-low-strobe-sos.

Pictured below next to my mobile and beam shots compared to a 3W luxeon torch (Mr Bulk Lionheart) that pushes out 80 lumens.

I start my training as a PC very soon and I've bought the LED Lenser P7, ordered from pellilite on ebay for £45 with free engraving - so you can have anything written on it also, i.e. your security firm / name etc. This may seem slightly expensive for a torch, but believe me it's worth the money.

I was blown away with how powerful it is, 200 lumens coming from a fairly small torch - on a focussed beam it can light up a house literally from 1 end of my road to the other. It feels really solid too, a top quality product. It came with a holster and caribine etc. to attach to your belt, would definitely recommend!
