STS-125 Shuttle Mission to Service Hubble Space Telescope Launches on Monday 7pm

Morning after the night before, the ACS repair looks promising. The wide field channel is back up and running, and that's the one that produces nearly all the pretty pictures we see. The high resolution channel is still dead, and it turns out that that's the one that caused the problems in the first place. Fortunately it's also by far the least used. Call the repair a success then.

Progress Update for Day 6, worth a listen, lots of technical stuff and information on Day 7 (today):

Updates for Day’s 3, 4 and 5 added to their respective Day video posts.

I get a little over exited watching Nasa TV :D Its unreal.

I know the feeling. :D The images are rather good as well:

Stupid pesky bolt. Get out of the way. :)

Well, that was an interesting hour and a half. In the end after all the millions of pounds spent on tools there was only one solution left: grab the handle and pull - hard. The astronaut won.

One problem after another today. The power tool they need to remove the 111 screws on the STIS cover has died. They may have killed it trying to remove that handrail.

There's a spare in the airlock which they're now off to dig out. This is going to be a looong EVA (they're consumable limited to 9 hours and have probably already abandoned the other task that was planned).

And another EVA update. Oh boy do the astronauts sound ****** off. I don't think I can blame them. Murphy has really been at them today.

Fingers crossed for no more serious problems. If they get one, it's probably game over.

EVA four of five draws to a close. The second 7 hour 55+ minute EVA of the mission, this time to repair the STIS instrument, broken bolts and tools notwithstanding.

Initial testing has shown the instrument to be alive, which is very promising, but it has shut itself down due to being too cold. This is not entirely surprising given that it has been open to space for several hours. Hopefully this is only a temporary setback.

Ironically, the plan to replace some thermal insulation on the telescope was abandoned due to the three-hour overrun in the STIS repair. Planners are working on whether at least some of that work can be added to EVA #5.

Some stunning pictures here and I'm looking forward to seeing some new images from the Hubble telescope when it's working again.

Lets just hope they remember to take the lens cap off.
