Currently I'm renting a room and I pay on the 1st of every month. I want to move out half way through a month. The only thing the contract says is that 1 month's notice must be given.

Do I have the right therefore to agree with the landlord to only pay half the month's rent, provided I give enough notice, or can he force me to pay for the full month even though I'll be gone halfway through? Thank you.

You should be able to pay a half month's rent, providing suitable notice has been given.

you give appropriate notice and then you pay until the day you leave. most of the time this will mean paying up for the month then getting £x back. If you can get it agreed early enough then you should be able to just pay half the month.
we have had different places want to do different thing, but always only paid half in the end.
