Street Fighter (SFIV, SSFIV, HDR)

I've become bored with the game since I swapped to Ryu. He's so dull and plays in a cookie cutter style but it's so effective I can't switch back to Blanka.

Lol i don't disagree. I also tried a few rounds against raniac with ryu, now before i switched to the stick he was miles better than me so matters were even worse when i played as abel against him ;ast night. However with ryu it was just fireball x 10, bait jump, light DP, ultra, win. Seriously, even with my crappy stick skills i managed to win a few rounds with him. Didn't win a single with Abel despite him being pretty much the only character i've played for the past couple of months.

I think what bothers me is that if someone makes one tiny mistake when fighting ryu, they'll eat a heavy reversal DP, it requires no skill or timing to pull of that reversal DP too, just keep mashing the command. The same applies to all shoto characters tbh and it's pretty widely agreed that abel has some of the most punishable attacks in the game so i've been on the receiving end of reversals one to many times (change of direction combo just leaves a giant window for a counter, far greater than that of a light DP despite doing a fraction of the damage). I very much prefer the way Tekken works, no reversals as such, you have to place a perfectly timed parry which will break their combo and give you a split second for a counter. If said counter is not executed quickly enough both characters 'reset' simultaneously, also if you fail a combo the cool down time for your last attack is typically roughly the same as their recovery time from the last attack so reversals due to messing up a combo just don't happen.

I've taken a break from the game since I joined some friends playing Warcraft again and I'm currently bumming it to get to max level so I can get back to doing the high level content. (ditched my other level 80 char but getting geard up by new guild when I hit 80) :)

So essentially, lots of us are losing interest. Tbh i'm surprised, this time last month i was convinced i'd still be loving this game in a years time. I think the PS3 issues brought with the championship patch have added to the problem considerably though; losing to a reversal DP is far more annoying when you know you have to wait a long time till you can find another match.

I'll be back on it but WoW is taking priority, I'll have this new character at max level by end of the week but then I have to level up character skills and make some money.

In a few weeks I'll be able to easily juggle the two. :p

I'm also bored because my flat mate buggered off home and online play sucks compared to offline :(

Links and reaction blocking are really weird online and lag spikes seem really common.

My flatmate also plays much more interesting characters than the Ryu/Akuma/Sagat whores online and playing against Seth and Dhalsim is really refreshing.

My online regulars being raging Halo fangirls and refusing to try anything new helped pull me away from SFIV too :(

I have never ever played a seth online, i could count the number of times i've fought 'sim, rufus and fuerte on one hand too i imagine. It really is just ken, ryu, ken, ryu, sagat, ryu... utter yawn.

A lot of the regular players on here are switching to the staple characters too (Mailman -> Ryu, Me -> Ryu, Margaret -> Sagat).

It's because, i'm sad to say it, but the tiers do actually have more of an affect on matches than i previously thought. I'm not saying a 6-4 matchup is a lost cause, one guy will have to work harder but it isn't exactly unfair. A 7-3 matchup however is a lost cause imo, a half decent gief will just walk all over me if i use abel for example. All giefs' attacks beat abels, all his pokes have a longer range and higher priority, he can counter any of abels attacks on block whereas abel can counter none, it's just an uphill struggle with a boulder tied around your goolies.

Iirc, sagat, balrog and ryu have no 7-3 match ups and therefore no matter who your opponent uses you'll stand a good chance of a win. I know it sounds like i'm just whining but tbh the tiers exist for a reason; some characters are just stronger than others. The fact that most people are leaning towards the S/A ranked players surely must be reasonable evidence towards this.

As i say, even i'm leaning towards playing as Balrog. It's just easier having a stupidly high priority, easy to execute, safe move.

It is disappointing to see Blanka plummet down the tiers as each new one comes out :(

I think people hear about tier lists and jump ship to the top tier characters without much though as I don't think anyone I've seen on here is anywhere near good enough for tiers to matter much (obviously hugely skewed matches like zangief/abel and fuerte/seth are excluded).

As i say, a 6-4 matchup doesn't really matter to us, at the top level of play maybe, but not for us. My problem is the fact that Abel actually has a skewed matchup, it basically means as soon as i see gief being picked i know i'm in trouble, most characters below tier B have matchups that are heavily biased against them too. The result? Pick a high tiered character; most don't have any really bad matchups therefore you're never going to end up on the receiving end of one.

explain this to me

I don't play that often but I usually play cammy/bison and I'm happy to have goes at the other charaters ignoring sagat, ryu, akuma, ken so if you don;t care to much and just want fun games feel free to add me.

Don't care to much about ranks either as ranks encourage people to play the characters like ryu/sagat etc... because they're afraid they might lose a game as someone else.

i much prefer tekken/sc systems too, priority was a huge concern when i first learned of it and it still is... i guess it has to be this way though with a game thats this fast.

i will still be playing sf4 for a long time but once tekken 6 comes along, i will no doubt switch over :D

also screw tiers, theres a way of making any char work as long as it suits the way you play, just have fun rocking whoever you wanna use. it may not sound right coming from ken user but it turns out he fits into several of my criteria for a good character: flashy, aggresive and good mix ups for mind games. ken get used less the higher you climb anyway, 99% of the kens out there play like hes ryu and inevitably switch to ryu :p

After having 500 battle points average with ken I've boosted those points to 1200 with bison. Bison is certainly my new main, I've won a lot more fights with him. I've even managed to beat sagat and zangief no problem. Happy days. :)

I lost to a guy who kept just doing high kicks though -_-

Problem is the majority of people choose Ryu or Ken, therefore unless you are really good with Ken, you don't have much chance since everyone is experienced playing against him. I know I love it when I see I'm up against him, it's only the odd time I will come up against someone who's really good.

You have had more success with Bison because not that many ppl choose him, he is a strong character so even if you are average and just know his basic moves, you will beat quite afew ppl who just won't know how to block or counter his moves. I have played some very strong Bisons who I just have no answer too, at the same time I have played some v poor Bisons who you can just tell are noobs who just know afew basic moves and keep doing them over and over :p

And as far as the tier listings go, I don't think that affects anyone unless at the very top level. In G2 I now come across seth's, bison's, vega's, chun li's, and not that many ryu/kens. Sometimes I win, sometimes I get absolutely thrashed. It's all about the player at the other end rather then the character they choose.

Must admit, I'm taking a break for a bit. Playing Homeworld 2 on the PC for something completely different.
This is partly due to my massive execution frustrations (still not consistent with FADC -> ultra in training and NEVER pulled it off in a match), and partly down to the troubles getting decent online connections.

That's not to say I'm done with this game by a long shot. SFIII 3 was still going strong until the day of SFIV's release and is stilll going well today, so I figure I have years and years to practice. I intend to get good, and I will...... one day.

This game has more to offer than just the game if you choose to take it that way. I personally have met a decent, fair, very heplfull and mature group of gamers through this game on this forum alone.
I've never placed anywhere in the events we've had but I've enjoyed being a part of those events immensely.

Also, I've been into stick building for years now. Sure, I only built one previously and it was ugly and at the time I didn't realise I was using awful, awful components. But now that it's become more popular due to this game in main, it's another community I can get involved in. I've got a stick I will be very proud of in the pipeline and chances are that won't be the only one I build over the next few years.

I think what would really keep peoples interest high, certainly the propper gamers on here, would be if there was a real SFIV tournament scene like there are in the US and Japan.
I'm not talking EVO level, but if you look on SRK there are dozens of small indy tourneys happing all over America every weekend.
If we had a scene like that to be involved in we'd all be a lot more inspired by this game....................

So...... I personally, still have to get a LOT better, have to start using a stick which will take more time and I'm sure will give me a sense of satisfaction once it starts to click, I have plenty of ideas for sticks I'd like to knock up in future, and fingers crossed I'll find a London based tourney scene to get involved in too.

The above will take up a small portion of my life for years to come, and I think it's as valid a hobby as anything else I could do in my spare time :)

Lol, didn't realise I had so much oppinion on the matter!!! :p

I think you're onto something there. Online play is very poor compared to decent offline competition, and when I finish Uni in a month I'll have no offline people to play with and the thought of only ever having decent competition by playing online really doesn't sit well with me.
