She previously had an S3 and has bought a diesel due to doing lots of miles to commute to work. She is however moving closer to work and is wanting a petrol again.

She doesn't want a BMW but loves Audis and really likes the S5.

What other cars are out there?

Merc SL55 AMG?
Ferrari 348? :D

Ohh and she's just bought a Yamaha R1!!

And before anyone says anything, unfortunatley she's married.

If she buys an S5, tell her not to go to the Audi garage down at Preston Farm (or whatever it's called) as they are worse that useless from our experiences!

Alternatives; hmmmm. I'd go with an older SL or a newer SLK, I know Mercedes often do cracking deals on finance through themselves - they gave us a brilliant set of quotes for a range of new and nearly-new E Classes the other week.
Shame she's written BMW off, as a 335 or 135 could be ideal.

Plus the Mercedes garage at preston farm are brilliant ;)

Not really.

She did say she fancies the S4/5 but I don't want her dropping £30,000 without at least checking out the competition.

if she wants something new (like 1 year old new) then i cant think of much else that will be nicer.

New shape M3 is 40k + for a good one, M5 for 30k or under is going to be a lot older than the comparative S4/S5

Having said that though, theres a lot of 911 Carreras (997 model) for about 35k if the budget would stretch a bit ?

but then it is over 4 years old. Is this too much ?

you can get a very nice cayman or boxter for that sort of money. I my self would not touch a 30k 911 as I think you need closer to 45k if you want a good 997.

But if she is not a BMW fan at 30k I would go for a S5. But you should get her to test drive a 335i she may fall in love with it.
