Bear Grylls: Chief Scout

Cos that's the Scouts way isn't it?

Yep, practicing/showing survival techniques. Scouts hardly put themselves in the way of life threatening danger on purpose, I'm sure if things got out of hand they would also go camping in a hotel.

Ray Mears and Bear Grylls present different shows, and I like them both. You lot need to get over the fact that Bear Grylls doesn't endanger his life for a TV show, he simply shows survival techniques and how to get out of certain situations.

Ray Mears is undoubtedly the more accomplished survivalist.

Bear Grylls is quite clearly the best choice for Chief Scout.

No doubt I'd rather be stuck in the middle of nowhere with Ray over Bear but at no stage does that suggest that he's not a good choice for the Scouts.

You other lot just wanted an opportunity to do the whole "My survivalist explorer is bigger than yours!" thing. Honestly it's like watching a bunch of preschoolers arguing in the sandpit.

I didn't say he's not a good choice for the Scouts. He is a good choice.

I simply believe that Mears would have been a better choice.

It's a TV show, of course it's fake. What's the point in unnecessary pain and suffering if it's not on camera anyway? I like him and hearing the *huge surprise* that some of the stuff is made to look more dramatic than it actually is, hasn't changed my opinion of him in the slightest.
but it used to be made to look like a documentary or something until they were forced to put that writing before the show :p

making out hes sleeping in the pouring rain in drenched clothes with freezing tempratures and just a bit of straw to keep him warm lol.
in reality he was quickly in a nice warm bath :p

some of hsi so called survial advice will get you killed aswell hes iresponible not the type of person i would want setting my kids an example hes one step away from that stupid MTV show jackass

I realy enjoy Ray Mears tv show, simply because the stuff he does is incredbile, yet very simple.

Unfortunatly, he is not the kind of person children can relate to. This guy however, is.

Also as said, he climed Everest, so he's goota have massive stones.

I think he's an excellent choice. He has charisma and an excellent public image which is just what the scout movement needs.

Yes there were things in his TV shows that are staged and they stayed in hotels but that just proves that they staged some scenes and stayed in a hotel while filming a TV show it doesn't mean that he isn't an expert in what he is demonstrating.

You didn't say experienced, you said knowledgeable, and he has knowledge in spade fulls. Do you honestly think he doesn't have decent survivor knowledge, and transferrable skills that he can apply to the scouts? Perhaps you think Peter Duncan knew more of survival than Bear Grylls?

As for your thick friend, I can't see what that's got to do with Grylls. Or do you believe that all special forces people are retards, even after you've heard them speaking eloquently and entertainingly on national TV

Congratulations on tailoring the argument. Knowledge and experience, for the sake of this argument, are pretty much the same thing, arent they? I mean, i'm sorry that i used a different word to describe the same thing... i didnt realise it would cause a problem for you. There's no need to be so pedantic.

I didn't say he was my friend. I said i knew a guy. Do you see what i did there? So well done for conforming to your own argument. You obviously have an issue understaning context so again, i'll spell it out for you. The context of my statement regarding the commando i know is that just because someone has some kind of title, in this case "been in the special forces", doesn't make him immediately qualified to dish out that experience to children. Now, because i already know exactly what you're about to respond with, i'll answer that preemptively. I am aware that Grylls has experience and is capable of teaching these things. I already said in my first post i can understand the choice to make Grylls a Chief Scout. I'm merely saying, there are better choices available, and just because he was special forces, doesn't make him the best.

Is this based on anything more than what you've read or been told?

Interested to know what survival knowledge you have or what you're basing this on.

who? Seems like perfect choice to me, intresting, knowledgeable and with achivements like youngest Brit up (and down..) mt everest you can't really call him a fake.

I can't believe there are thousands on scouts' waiting lists. His programs are fun to watch and he seems committed to the scouts in a way so I can't see why he's a bad choice. Maybe not the best

People suggest Ray Mears, but I'm sure many young cubs and scouts much prefer watching Bear Grylls over Ray Mears: I know I certainly do.

A good choice in my opinion.

He was in the Territorial SAS what ever that is?

The Territorial Army has an SAS contingent, namely 21 and 23 SAS Regiment which each have 4 squadrons. They are staffed by civilians as the TA usually is but senior ranks are from the regular 22 SAS Regiment.

As for Bear Grylls, I think he is a good choice although I thought Tefal would have been the top choice.
