Call the Fire Brigade

No sprinklers fitted because they were deemed unnecessary since staff were not regularly on site. In other words, a dodgy cost-cutting measure which has now backfired spectacularly.

Pathetic.

Wouldnt a sprinkler system be a really bad idea in a facility housing diesel? Either way though, the fire dept is not just about fighting fires - but about preventing them, this is pretty embarassing.

Believe it or not - Health & Safety legislation prevent staff from tackling any fire on the premises other than in the way staff at any other "non emergency service" business would, i.e. evacuate the premises and a fire marshall will go and investigate the area the fire is reported to be in but will not tackle the fire unless it is very minor indeed.

I know, it sounds ridiculous.

What really is ridiculous though is that we heard on the fire brigade rumour mill/grapevine last night that a number of the instructional staff at the college run retained ( part time firefighters who respond to firecalls from their normal jobs via pagers ). So they had their alerters go off, they then got into their cars and drove to the nearby retained fire station, got kitted up and mobilised back to the college to begin firefighting operations.

You couldn't make it up. :p

Not great for diesel/oil storage?

Foam sprinklers would have been fine.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue said later: 'There was not enough risk to life to justify putting a sprinkler system in the building.

'It is essentially a large warehouse with lots of open doors, so in terms of risk assessment it would not qualify.'
