Death knell for hunting ban as police abandon monitoring operations

My uncles egg business has 20,000 free-range hens, set to increase to 54,000 when they merge with another company this year. Care to give a viable way of safely protecting them all from foxes?

Easy get 2-4 English mastiffs=sorted(i dont accept paypal..cash will do fine) :)

where is this place you speak of?

700 acre wide open? I think you only need care about people nicking the chickens
then anything else thats if its wide open.

The countryside is generally wide open... Obviously there are measures in place at the moment to try to prevent foxes etc, but they are far from foolproof.

You seem to think it would be easy to protect several thousand hens from foxes in a financially viable way, and I'm intrigued to find out how, seeing as egg farmers for generations have not been able to.

I wish your uncle luck :)

But its like me buying a mclaren F1 road car and leaving the keys in.
no protection.

That book doesn't give the financially viable way Tommy asked for, indeed this quote is plucked direct from that webpage you offered:

Perimeter Fencing

This should separate the poultry farm from the outside world. There is no easy or cheap way of doing this and it is one of the most substantial costs facing anyone thinking of starting a free-range poultry farm.

You might want to google a different answer.....

:p

Yes and I'm pretty sure my uncle has taken most if not all of those precautions, but as has been said previously, it's not guaranteed safety.

As for the theft of hens, it doesn't really happen. A McLaren F1 Road Car is far easier to steal and far easier to sell on, so not a great comparison there. Either way I think you've made it fairly obvious throughout this thread that you have fairly little knowledge when it comes to country life, so as far as I'm concerned your opinion on these matters will be taken extremely lightly!

Well I gave it a go :D

Nobody has an issue with the dogs, their instincts, or their natural behaviour.

They do have an issue with the idiots who follow them round on horses and treat it as a "sport".

BTW - I'm pro hunting (rifles) and go hunting myself.

Always interested: what do you shoot there fella? FAC stuff or (like me) airguns?

As you allude to some people having a dislike of the 'idiots on horses' treating it a as 'sport', have you ever encountered the same view directed at yourself for shooting? I've had the same when following a hunt on foot, so it's not exclusive to 'toffs on horses', a common misconception I've encountered elsewhere.
I was trying to examine some of my own observations and experience regarding a specific conversation I had some time ago with a good friend.

I enjoy shooting myself when I'm able - the odd rat here and there and rabbits etc also target shooting too. My other half cannot understand my enjoyment of it as a 'sport' and as such we rarely discuss it because she ends up shouting :p

HELLO HELLO you never mentioned HUNTS you just said about fluffy animals being hurt
and tell these barbaric country bumpkins how to live their life - often with the threat of violence.

They do have foxs in the city but you dont get over dressed retards
Hunting in the city..WHY because the Hunts would become the Hunted.

KARMA for the city fox :)

My God are you simple. Foxes need to be controlled in the countryside due to disease and the killing of livestock. Do you see fields of livestock in cities? Not even sure why Im replying to your post actually!

I think the pro hunts people have inferiority complex.
Look at me I am so Hard I kill things that cant hurt me because they are small.
And how do you we are Townies on this forum? Some maybe are from Fakenham, Norfolk.

I think the anti hunts people have a superiorty complex.
Look at me I don't need any of the skills my race has developed and honed since we climbed out of the trees millions of years ago.

Imagine for a minute if the recent swine flu epidemic was to mirror the black death and over 50% of the population die. Key people in the food supply chain are gone taking with them the knowledge and skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Imagine all the anti hunt protesters dying of starvation once the supermarkets are looted bare. Well thats where food comes from right?

Far fetched? maybe, but to turn your back on the facts of life is just stupid. Remember that if any of your ancestors had refused to hunt you wouldn't exist!

You say hunting and all the customs and traditions that come with it are not relevant today.

But what about tommorrow?

I don't have a side in the fox debate, I think it's blown up out of all proportion and is generally a class thing or media brainwashing for most people.

I do have a base objection to one group of people telling another group what they can do when it's harming nobody at all though (foxes aren't people, we kill animals all the time, it's not an argument).

(please note OCUK are in no way responsible for the way in which i spend money left over from their incredible deals even if this results in the death of rats).

Imho i dont think it should evfer have been banned but its the same as any minority sport when the tree huggers get there claws into summit .

(Resists temptation to post kill shots :P )
