Q9550 overclocking on a Gigabyte P35c DS3r...

Anyone doing it?

Remember having some issues with overclocking my E6600 a while ago and was down to the board being not as good as the hype.

Fancy one of these CPU's but wondering if its worth it with this board, and a mobo replacement might as well mean an i7 upgrade.

Also got 4x1gb GeiL DDR2 6400 if that comes in to the picture when OC'ing.

I have the CPU, but I7 will eat it alive, but I don't care cos I mainly use my PC for gaming anyway.

My config - sign. MB is another, but the same chipset. Result - 3825MHz without VoltMod! And you should know that P35/45 chip is the best in Quad Core Proc overclocking. Make right choice

A bit of a rash statement? Always thought that p35/p35 are thes best for q6xxx overclocking and x38/x48 the best for q9xxx overclocking from memory?

No, I had X38 chip mobo. Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 - not overclockers choise generally. I had 460MHz MB upper frequency limit... Maybe bad copy, but...

460Mhz is enough for most people unless you are overclocking to extremes and the tendancy is for the cpu to top out before the board.

Had some great results with a q6600 in an asus p5q dlx p45, 3.8ghz on air, ive since sold the q6600 and bought a q9550 to try out, itll be interesting to see how the 2 cpu's compare on a p45 chipset clocking wise.

Ive heard that p45 is the better board for overclocking, though i cant vouch for x48 as ive never tried one, didnt ever see the need arising for an x48 as i never planned to use crossfire.

Im afraid its gonna be a few days before i can start overclocking

, need to update the bios on my p5q deluxe to fully recognise the q9550. My usb flash drive has packed in and im not risking the asus windows flash utility. Hoping to achieve 4ghz or so, my cooling should (hopefully) be able to cope with it, 2 x 2000 rpm fans on a TRUE black.

A heck of a lot of x38 boards couldn't take a Q9xxx over 450mhz. Dirt cheap P35 boards were beating it.

X48 seems a lot better, but no better than a decent P45 board.

I've just done this (almost the same upgrade)

Went from a G0 Q6600 to a E0 Q9650 on a GA-P35-DSR v1.0 :eek:

Set the voltage manually to default, and went for it a bit. Settled on an easy 400x9 for 3.6Ghz on stock volts.

Have left it to bed in for a day or so before pushing harder at stock volts and see where I get to.

Memory might hold me back more than anything as its Kingston 6400

Was thinking about getting some DDR3 to help boost clocking abilities especially since im in 4x1gb ATM.

Cheers for that, again what im looking for, looks like the mobo isn't spent yet.

A lot seeing the memory as a big factor here, going to

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 10666C9 1333MHz

myself will probably help the cause.
