Will we see any more Quad 775 CPU`s soon ?

By the sounds of things the i5 is going to be the new Celeron dual core. Wasnt there going to be an i6 aswell or was that rubbish news i heard a while back?

Yeah I heard:

AMD pushing up their roadmap.
AMD 6 core server processor out end of May - Speculation
I5 out in July - 2 core 4 thread i5 cpus and 4 core /8 thread cpus - latest intel roadmap
i7 940 and Extreme 965EE end of line in Sept. - announcement from intel.

Now i dont see intel pulling their 2 flagships without having repacements for them so im expecting new high end CPUs by Sept.

If AMD do launch their 6core CPU in the next few weeks intel wont be far behind.

I asked a few days ago if it was worth replacing my E8500 (c o stepping ) for a Q9650 and was advised to stick with what i have at the moment. I know that the 775 socket has now been replaced; but would like to ask is this the end of the line for me?
I have overclocked my system to 3.80Ghz, I cant see the point in jumping ship for i7 motherboard at this present time.
So is this where i remain or should i opt for a E8600 as my final upgrade for my system?

My questions are:

1.IS it too slow? Are you really going to notice the difference an extra 200-400Mhz will make?

2. Do you use programs which use quad cores?

If both is no, then keep what you have for now. You can always buy the last of the 775 socket cpus before they go end of line later and decide then if you need quad core.

I think Intel are just going to refine the current batch of quad core socket 755 processors they already have, until i5 is ready. they have already released low power versions of the Q8200 and Q9550. They have an 'S' on the end of the revision name, and have a TDP of 65W instead of 95W:

They overclock VERY well, but are nearly £50-60 more than their 95W counterparts. I'm suprised OC isn't stocking them!

I see no point in upgrading to i5 nor i7 atm, Its just not worth the expense. Maybe in a year or 2 once the prices are a bit more sane :p

think that is just nonsense really.. Where did you hear about this? I'd another 2 years or more is more realistic.

The LGA 1156/1160 socket is the new mainstream socket which will start to replace 775 begining with the mid level quad & dual cores, by Q2 2010 the new socket will have replaced everything down to E7xxx leaving just the Pentium Dual Core E5xxx & Celeron E1xxx 775 chips these will be phased out in the second half of the year.

These chips are not targeted towards overclocking thier main purpose is to enable small form factors (some ITX boards only work with 65W chips, also so do some all in one solutions). These will be replaced in Q1 2010 with Lynnfield based parts.
