Eagle F1 ASYM - Sidewall advice...

Dont worry im sure it will be fine. Changing a tyre because of that is a waste of money IMO

Really? I remember changing the tyres on my wifes car as a few had loads of small cracks all the way around the sidewalls. Thought I'd be safe rather then sorry.

Cant tell from those pics but if the cut reaches the cord then the tyre is unfit for road use, though that is from my limited understanding of these things.

I really would not be too bothered about some insignifficant cracks.

If I VOR'd (vehicle off road) every trailer I had with cracks in the sidewall, I'd never get a job done!

Tears with visible cord are much more concerning, of which, you don't seem to have any.

Best practice is to replace the tyres, what happens in the real world is quite another matter.

Doesn't explain why 3 of my tyres are pristine with no hints of cracks and the other has several! I know truck tyres do crack due to heat exposure, loads etc but this seems a little different I think.

My own car- I'd keep an eye on it,
Advice to anyone else- change it; Suspicious that it is just on one tyre, cracks look same distance from bead and tread, suggesting a problem or failure in a sidewall cord.
The fact that you are asking means you are concerned, so get it changed, would you be comfortable driving 500miles or more tomorrow if you needed to?

Scallies with a pen-knife?

Unlikely, car is parked in a garage at home and private flat parking at in Cambs. I know NHS car parks are not high security but even then why just the one tyre?

Will be taking it in to be changed on Friday, I think that you have a point with the sidewall cord, will get it sent back to Goodyear to be looked at - and a free replacement for me I hope!

there will be a manufacturing date on the tyres somewhere.
no idea where they are on an F1 though, i'm sure fox will know ;)

it's got nothing to do with purchase date. i got 2 conti's the other month, but they were made in late 2008
one of them might be a fair bit older than the others, you never know..

or maybe you need XL tyres?

Its called a DOT code lol:

DOT Codes

DOT codes are US government tyre identification number. Each DOT code will usually comprise of 11 or 12 letters and numbers and gives information about, amongst other things, where and when the tyre was manufactured. The first two letters indicate the plant in which the tyre was produced and the last three or (since Y2K) four indicate when it was made.

The ND5N in pic 2 relates to this: ND --> DEUTSCHE GOODYEAR G.M.B.H. --> PHILIPSBURG BRUCHSAL --> --> GERMANY

EDIT - They are XL tyres!

meh, the contis have 4 numbers in an oval which have the date, in addition to the DOT code..

eg. 0408, 0109, etc :p

Yep remember my contis having them too, Im sure the Eagles do as well, just dont have the tyre in front of me to see!

Just checked, the numbers 2508 suggest week 25 2008 is when the tyre was made, not even been a year since it was made!

ah yes, i guess that means they're fine
i took it to mean that they're far too young to crack

either way, they do look superficial

We will find out tomorrow whether they are superficial, when the tyre comes off the rim and properly checked!

Well I have just been to Calthorpe Tyres in Olton, W.Mids. There is a reason I have been buying tyres from them for such a long time. Dan, took one look at the tyre and told me it certainly wasn't right, he commented on how I look after my car so he was certain it wasn't caused by bashing the tyre against the pavement everytime I park!

The conclusions from two opinions at Calthorpe were:

1. The tyre is safe to drive on at the moment, the 'cuts' are not penetrating to any substantial depth.

2. The tyre is not as it should be, hence it will be sent back to Goodyear for a refund.

3. A new tyre will be fitted to my car in its place, paid for by Goodyear.

Can't get much better service than that! So Tuesday I will have the new tyre on the car :)

Result :)

This is why I pay a little extra and use a local tyre fitter, they know you are a regular customer so any crap and you'll be off.
