Hi there,

Right, first thing first, I dont know much about the setup of the iPhone hence me creating this thread.

Im wanting to get an iPhone for webrowsing on the go. My 5800 is good at it but Im after something with a larger screen and a better browser. Plus dedicated apps for Twitter and such like would be a bonus.

Ive seen that there is plenty of iPhones on the 'bay, also getting sold on places like Play.com.

O2 would be my choice of network, so would I need to get an unlocked phone? I do plan to use a simplicity sim card as I dont want to be tied down in an 18 month contract. Can this be done? Would I get the full benefits of the iPhone?

When it says 'Jailbroken', what does that actually mean?

Thanks :)

You don't need to grab an unlocked phone if you're going to be with o2, and a Simplicity sim card should work fine on the iPhone.

Jailbroken is where people can use apps that aren't on the app store and basically opens the iPhone up to more features. Not sure on the legal side of things with that, so at the moment all I can is I don't recommend it :p There is a chance of bricking your iPhone if I recall. It's basically the iPhone equivilent of using custom firmware on your PSP.

As a side note - Apple has a meeting called the WWDC and it's going to happen Early June. It's rumoured to be announcing a new iPhone for release, that is rumoured for release in Late June/Early July. Nothings been confirmed, but if you buy an iPhone 3G now, you run the risk of buying old technology come June/July time.

As far as i know jailbreaking an iphone is now illegal..well deemed illegal by Apple of course...perhaps if they didnt lock the phone then people wouldnt need to jailbreak the bloody thing:p.

Id wait to see what the new iphone is all about before buying one...supposedly better ive heard the new one.

Have you tried mavity for your 5800? It's an amazing Twitter client, the best I've found on any phone. Shame it's not free but there is a 10 day trial version.

Have you tried the Opera Mini browser? I much prefer it to the standard browser. Worth trying and potentially saving a few hundred pounds :)

I do use the Opera Mini browser. Sometimes it can be limited though. For example it you cant reply to a tweet which is a pain.

I will take a look at mavity. Dont mind paying for a decent app tbh.

So come June / July there is talk of a new iPhone. The only main differences I see there being is a storage capacity increase and maybe a slightly better camera, maybe to 3.2mp. Also the introduction of MMS would be useful.
