My dad goes hunting and shooting fairly reguarly now, and keeps a couple of working dogs. As such he's looking at a new Diesel 4x4 around the £10,000 mark.

I've been trying to steer him away from the Lexus RX's and the Shoguns, more towards the Touraeg's and Range Rovers (and the £12-13k price bracket). He also quite likes the look of the Mercedes ML series (with me prefering the GL ;))...

He'd be willing to stretch to around £15k if there was a really nice example.

Is there anything else we should look out for?

Cheers :)

Well he takes the dogs out every day, and goes to shoots/trials that are quite far away. He probably does about 10-15k miles a year at present.

I do like the old Defender's, but I don't think he'd have one :(

Think a Toyota Landcruiser would be a good shout in this category, pretty good reliability and go anywhere ability.

He doesn't really like the Landcruiser's - can't say they're my thing either in the looks department, but thanks for the suggestion :)

Can't get a cooler 4x4 imo, apart from that gash steering wheel.

Now that is nice! However, and I should have mentioned this earlier, he wants an auto :(

The best you'll get is a Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 2.7 Auto. Superb machines. Forget the old Series 2 Landies, they're crap.
