Hi,

The last video card I bought was the 8800 GTS 512mb card. Up until then I knew what gen was what and what number suited each persons need.

However now I see 250, 260, 275 etc series and I don't know if the 2x is the same gen? If it is the same gen can someone explain which models are similar to what the 8800 was and which would be the lower end of the series ie thr 8600, 8200 etc was.

I hope this makes sense, I will try and explain a bit better if needs be.

Thanks.

275 > 260 > 250/9800GTX+

The 250 wouldn't really be an upgrade for you as it's just a re-badged 9800GTX.
Depending on the res you play and your budget, I think the 260 would hit the sweet spot and be a nice upgrade for you.

Have you had a look at what ATi has to offer?

Your 8800gts is basically just the 9800gtx with the core clock 25Mhz less (not very much really). The 9800gtx+ was then introduced, which is just a die shrink and a further small overclock. The 9800gtx+ was re branded to be the gts 250 (same exact specs). So in a rough way your card = gts 250, if you overclocked it slightly you would can get the same clockspeeds.

All the other gt* 2** cards are based on the new g200 core which is a step above the g92 in your 8800gts. These new cards are the gtx 260, gtx 275, gtx 285 and gtx 295.

As for budget cards: nvidia shyed away from rebranding other old cards (based on the g92 or g94) over to the new gt* 2** naming scheme. Therefore they remain the 9800gt, 9600gt and 9600gso.

NVidia really should have taken a page from ATI's book and kept the naming scheme simple and not renaming cards, it has just given them bad press.

In your position, I would go for a 4890 for £164 - very good price.
Although saying that, a 1GB 4870, or a 260 would be comfortable at that res.

Don't go for that BFG one, it's way overpriced, for £200 you're in the 275 territory.

1GB 4870 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-093-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=939
GTX260 '216' http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-104-GW&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927

Ignore for now. Just realised I miss red something.

... but I have just bought a 4890 for £165 from here. It should arrive today:) tbh the only reason I like Nvidia is that my x1800 was SO loud and my 8800 is silent.

The 4890 is on apar with the 275, but much cheaper.

Be interested how you find this card, performance, noise levels, etc.

It's a hefty premium (£50) if u want the BFG warranty when you could get a standard GTX260 from another manufacturer, with probably a 2yr warranty. Given that ur upgrading from an 8800GTS 512MB i would expect u will upgrade again before that 2 yr warranty is up. AFAIK XFX r reputed to have a very good warranty and on special terms with OCUK
***EXCLUSIVE Premium Priority 2 Year Warranty***

In the unlikely event of your card failing within 2 Years, OcUK will replace your card with a brand new one, pending testing within our standard RMA/ testing terms and conditions (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/support.php)

If spend cicra £150 i'd go for XFX GTX 260 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-131-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927

circa £170 XFX HD4890 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-124-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1403

or £200 Zotac GTX 275 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-018-ZT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1410 (although i may still be swayed by the 4890 at this price point).

All are great and will be a marked improvement over ur 8800 :)

Excellent, thanks everyone for the help.

I'm pretty sure I have enough information from this thread now to make a decision.

I just went from an 8800GTS to a GTX60 and it's a nice upgrade that I'm pleased with. Having said that, now that the 4890 has come down in price I would spend the extra £25 if I was you.

The other things that you may want to consider are that the Nvida cards come with CUDA, much lower idle power consumption and Physx while the ATi cards have 7.1 audio over HDMI capability........that's if any of those things are important to you of course!
