10.5.7

What a combo update?

A combination update (Combo update) is a large patch than can be downloaded and applied, much the same way as a regular update (also referred to as a delta update). However, the main differentiator is that a combo update can be applied regardless of the OS version e.g. 10.5.x -> latest

A normal update is usually specific to the current OS installed e.g. 10.5.6 -> 10.5.7, and therefore is a lot smaller as a significantly smaller number of files need to be patched. The size may also depend on the platform you run PPC / Intel.

Many people believe (including myself) that the combo updates are better as they replace all the old files with new versions, where the updates would simply patch them up. This "can" lead to some problems that are usually fixed by running a permissions repair.

It doesn't take a genius to realise that downloading combo updates will take longer as a result of the increased size, but in my experience they generally carry less of a hassle with them and another benefit is that the update servers tend to be hammered from everyone getting the "new update", so you can grab the combo updates direct from the Apple site at a normal speed.

:)

EDIT: It might be worth mentioning that updates from Software Update can be downloaded and "kept" on external disk, to speed up in the event of a system restore. After all, would you want to download another 900MB if you reformat?

10.5.7 went fine on my '07 iMac, I had to get the latest version of Smart Scroll, as the older version (2.8.8) doesn't support 10.5.7.

It also fixed my broken Finder :o which I did by trying to remove it from the Dock as I use Path Finder, yipee! So I'm leaving it well alone now! :p

Rumour is that this is the last update before Snow Leopard, any thoughts on that ?

WEP? The wireless security that can be cracked in minutes?

That's the least of your problems ;):D

Huh?...surely at the end of the day its all based on the password and you need that password to get in? And a brute attack going through all the possibilities would take ages wouldn't it?

No, with readily available software WEP can be cracked in minutes. The actual protocol is broken.

The only way to brake through WPA2 is with brute force.

Not sure I quite understand what you mean...do you have an article or something I can read that will explain it?
Just google wep cracking software. Theres a package for ubuntu that you can install to crack WEP. That will show you how easy it is.

WPA2 is far better.

Cracking it means they don't need the password at all.

As a general rule, I'd recommend you use WPA2 with a long password comprised of uppercase, lowercase, numerical and random characters

If you want to go hardcore, try using a password from the Steve Gibson website; https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

I was using a 64-character key, but it was a murder to enter on the iPhone so I trimmed it down to 8 characters :D

Aaaaaaaaaaanyway... 10.5.7.

Ive got a problem here peoples.

Downloaded and went to install, but my End of 08 iMac is frozen on installing, the blue bar hasnt done anything for an hour and it just says its Running Installer Script.

What should I do?

(hmm well just switched it off despite still being frozen, switched it back on and did the boot. reboot thing and loaded, and system is telling me it has in fact updated)
