much difference between these?

my current main (gaming) rig has the x6800 but i recently bought a htpc that has a e8500.

wondered if it was worth me selling one of the chips and getting a cheaper cpu in my htpc,,, i feel the 8500 might be overkill in my htpc?

is it possible that the 8500 clocks pretty well? sorry i'm not upto speed on those that all. i had my x6800 @ 3.95GHz but with high volts on my old mobo.

or should i spend time finding which clocks best on my specific setup?

any suggestiong for a cool running chip for my htpc would be welcome

Performance wise, there will be very little difference between them.

I would expect the E8500 to give marginally better results due to the extra cache but thats about it.

It will also operate at a higher FSB but in the real world that makes zero difference.

Technically, that E8500 will run significantly cooler and probably clock to about 4ghz with a lot less volts the your X6800.

If you plan on selling a chip then the resale value of the X6800 is virtually nothing. I'd be surprised if you were able to get £75 for it. They are still retailing at £500+ which is ridiculous. considering you can buy a full i7 set-up for that money.

The auction site might see you fair better but tbh that will be a lottery as well.

For your HTPC an E5200 @ stock will do the job perfectly.
