Pre-order N97 on nokia UK £499

For comparison, the N96 (free on some very attractive contracts) is £459.00 SIM free from Nokia. That's very encouraging for how much the N97 will be once it hits the operators.

£500 for the N97??...thats pretty damn good if you ask me...i was thinking close to £600 or something...I paid close to £500 last yr for that POS HTC Touch Diamond now that was a complete utter rip off.

Not liking that in USA they got a promotional code to preorder N97 for $525!
Ridiculously more expensive here.
Anyone preordered one yet?

Prices in the USA are generally exclusive of tax. Nokia is probably also looking to make a big push into the American market with this phone, so they might be willing to take a margin hit.

Besides, network operators in the US rip you off, so you're better off here, all things considered :)

499 is still less than I was expecting. Shame that the 20% Quidco offer is over though.

Yeah, pretty cheap for what I assume the phone is going to be, my HTC Touch HD sells sim free for around £550-£600, which I think is around the same price as the new touch pro will be (almost a direct competitor I think).

Hopefully they have got the firmware right this time...not much faith though since it took them around 6 months with the N95 and around 9 with the N96.

Does anyone see the point in preordering? I can't see there being a shortage or rise in price upon release.

people actually buy phones sim free? i'm waiting for orange to get it so i can finally upgrade a year late :) just hope it's less then 100 on a contract so i can sell my n95 and not make a loss in money

I wouldn't mind paying £499 for a phone if it means I won't have the phone branded with Orange/Vodafone ugly network logo.
Also to save myself debranding the phone from Orange/Voda rubbish firmware.

That's why you go with a good network like O2, who don't even lock their phones.:p

And yeah, Mammilian, some people apparently do, although I can't see why, unless the phone is relatively cheap, as you can usually get expensive phones on contract for less than the sim free price.

Full keyboard and touchscreen . Looks like a decent G1 competitor.

Can't wait for it now, I wanted to get the G1 but this looks like a better option. Hopefully stuff like tomtom will work immediately on it :D.
A G1 with more memory, better music, better camera and hopefully better (build) quality. Sounds great!

The Nokia 5800 wasn't branded when I received it on an Orange contract. Might be the same with this.

It's got more grunt than the current iPhone. It's no Samsung i8910 HD though.

Will the Samsung be all that though?

I've just never been a big fan of Samsung phones for some reason.

I haven't heard anything about the batt life - will it be decent?

I do...always have and always will...i absolutely detest network branded phones mainly due to the ****ers messing around with the firmware ie taking certain functions out. I dont mind paying a premium price for sim free handsets...

At the moment i have a tmobile branded BB BOLD which i recently unlocked and now looking to sell...just havent got around to putting it up for sale.

Battery life is surprisingly good for a phone with a 600Mhz CPU and 3.7" screen. That OLED screen must do wonders for battery life.

Isn't this a bit lacking on the horsepower front?

Have you used the 5800? It's pretty snappy with the new firmware. The N97 will have a reasonably similar software loadout and packs a few exubs MHz, so this at least suggests it should be fine for most purposes. The benefit, of course, is a cheaper phone with longer battery life.
