The Samsung OmniaHD i8910 ... this NEEDS it's own thread.

Will you guys ****ing hurry up with the user reviews? :p

Quick prediction; great screen, good camera....oh but it's running S60 :(
Do you really expect anything else? S60 has been around for long enough to know what it's like and you've seen the 5800 for a touch version, apart from the obvious hardware benefits (ok and maybe touchwiz but I doubt it) there's nothing else to get excited about with this phone.

The capacitive touchscreen may make a big difference to texting etc and im interested to know how responsive and accurate the screen is.

Well I've spent over a day with this phone and I'm impressed. I'll give you a quick run down.

-Call quality: First off the call quality is good, which is always a plus with a phone! My first couple of calls sounded a bit odd but I was only getting 1 or 2 bars of 2g reception. Once I was in an area with better coverage it was much better.

-Battery life: It's kind of hard to tell as I've been messing around with the device a lot. A full charge has kept me going all day with heavy use but it getting pretty low by the end of the day. Should get a better feel for this over the next few days.

-Speaker volume: Comparing this with my N95 8GB it is quieter and has noticeably less bass. I had the i8910 at full volume playing music and the same track on the N95 sounded as loud at between 70-80%. Although, I never really use phone speakers so I might not be the best person to comment on this.

-Audio quality in video recording: So far I've only had a quick go with the video recording. I took a HD video of my lcd tv! The audio was sampled at 8khz and although the voices were audible and I could understand what was said they didn't sound natural. I have recorded some more at the 3 other resolutions on offer, but haven't had a chance to upload them to a PC to check the sample rate. Playing them back on the phone the audio quality didn't seem much better that the HD video. I will have a good dig around with the video and camera tonight and get back to you all later.

-GIF performance: Mario does head bang at a decent rate on the Sammy! Not as fast as on MY PC but loads quicker than on my N95.

-Speed and operation: Now this is why I really like this phone. Everything feels really snappy. Transitions between menus are nice and fast and there is no sense of it lagging at any point. It takes about 2-3 seconds to load the camera app and get ready to shoot! I never liked the s60 browser on the N95, it was too slow and cumbersome. However on the i8910 it works great. It's nice and quick and easy to navigate. The only problem is with the text input that I mentioned earlier.

-Screen: This must the one of the main selling points of the phone. It's gorgeous! The colours are vivid and the screen is really bright even at the lowest setting. Watching video on it really shows it off. As I live in Newcastle I haven't really had much of a chance to test it in direct sunlight! From the brief moment I had outside with a bit of sun the screen did seem washed out but still legible.

-Apps: The phone came with a few extra apps pre installed. Quickoffice (only lets you read documents without upgrading), Roadsync, Adobe PDF reader and Asphalt 4 HD. I have also installed AccuWeather, X-plore and Opera. The only problem that I've had so far is with Opera. Some sites with a lot of text on slow it down to a point where it becomes unusable (these were never a problem on my N95). Also occasionally it won't give me the option to connect using gprs, the only connection option that is gives is 'search for WAN'. I love Opera Mini and really hope that these problems will be fixed in new releases.

-New Samsung goodies: I'm starting to like the Touchwiz interface. It's nice and fluid and using it I can access most of the phones features quickly. I thought the photo contacts would be a bit of a gimmick, but to my surprise it's a good looking feature that it useful. The cover flow copy they have used for the music player is ok, but the animation isn't as smooth as I would like and it doesn’t wrap around. It shows the albums in alphabetical order, but you can't go from A straight to Z and this get annoying. The kinetic gallery works well, but you get the same old S60 problem of it displaying every image on the phone. Until I can get an app to read the 'private' folder and hide the AccuWeater files in there this will be an issue.

Overall I'm really happy with the phone, but am praying that Samsung will be providing firmware updates. The audio recording in videos is not acceptable for a device whose marketing is focused on the HD recording abilities.
I think that I'm going to get a refund on the phone tomorrow. Not because of the device itself, but due to the terrible reception on the Orange network in my house. Their coverage checker on their website stated that I should be getting very good 3.5G, 3G and 2G reception where I live, but that is a load of crap. And what good is a brilliant phone if you can't make phone calls?!

Would like to know what the text-input problems were that he mentioned.

Still 50/50 about this.

Picked up my i8910 at lunch today. Got it from an Orange shop in Newcastle.
First impressions are good. Brilliant screen, fast menu navigation and the touch recognition seems spot on. However there do seem to be a few issues.... I'm writing this on the phone using the built in browser and it won't let me edit the text I've already written. As soon as I select text or try to move the cursor back it just goes straight to the end of text. Tho it could just be me being stupid! Going to have a proper play with it now and will report back later. If anyones got questions I'll do my best to answer. Oh and one last thing the Orange branding is a small logo right in the middle of the battery cover.

Symbian OS issue, I have the same problem on my 5800, drives me mad.

Right..I use my iphone regularly to post on this forum and many a time have to go back on my text to edit.

So you can't do that on the Omnia HD....:( How stupid if that's the case.

I was thinking of getting it as well.

Thanks for the review....i'll see for myself tomorrow -got the royal mail despatch code just WAHOO!

Why am I so indecisive! I still can't commit to choosing either this, the LG arena or something else that may come along.

This phone does everything I want, but with only two flaws, it's rather (very) large size, and the poor audio on videos. The arena seems to be the only other device that does everything I'm looking for (and is actually available now), but it can't install applications, and seems to have a rather naff overall OS.

DAnDan you have been on here looking and talking about this phone as much as i have......GO FOR IT! ha ha

In all fairness i was a little undecided and still am but its shiny new and coming to me tomorrow. i'll let you know what i think of the old brick...

Thanks N3tto, I'm useless at making decisions with things like these. I'll decide on one, and then a few hours later be right back to square one and have absolutely no idea again.

What were you given before you cancelled? Was it the same deal but £77 for the handset? Also, according to orange website, you get sat nav from £35 contract onwards.
