Hi, i am considering changing to an x58 motherboard in the future but would like to keep my current oem 64 bit vista for a good while until windows 7 becomes established. Is this possible or will i need to buy another vista license?

I've google'd it and people are getting very mixed results doing this sort of thing so i thought i'd ask here to confirm.

Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

OEM is tied to the mobo you activated it with. While it may be plausible you can get the key to work on another mobo ie tell them it broke and this is the replacement, it will no longer be any more licensed than a cracked copy of it.

Is it possible to install it and get it activated? Yes

Is it breaking the EULA and so unlicensed? Yes

Thats about all there is to it really.

OEM you change any component bar the motherboard, unless a warranty replacement from the manufacturer or supplier.

Retail can be installed on any system belongs your only running one instance.

Do excuse me being a bit stupid.....

I've had my OEM copy of XP for a few years now, and have recently built a new system. My new Vista 64 should arrive today, but in the mean time I've been using my old XP.

I've installed it, entered the product key, activated it and it's been authenticated by Microsoft in order to use windows update.... Does this mean that despite the activation and authentication, my copy of XP is now illegal?!?!

(sorry to derail the topic slightly OP, didn't feel this question was worth its own thread)
