topping up oil

oh haha at the funny rover jokes, I only noticed it when I changed the oil, topped it up to the level about half way up on the dip stick started it drove about and after a little while the oil low light came on the trip computer (low oil low coolant and low windscreen washer level ) and sure enough the level was just below the minimum topped it up again and it went off, never really noticed it on there before then.

only put in 500ml and it's gone from under minimum to max.
seems like a rather low threshold..

That's what mine is. That should be good news for you! It means you were only 500ml down, and not 1L+.

How long did you wait to check the oil after topping it up?

i didn't wait

i'm going to pop out in a bit and have a look again

just checked, after ~20 mins, and it's gone down to half-way. still a surprising jump after such a small amount..

it's still at max, weird.

so my car uses 500ml in 8000 miles and an RX8 uses a litre in 1000? where does it go?
