As for an elected Prime Minister, do we really need one as decisions are taken by cabinet rather than just the Prime Minister?

We've had a presidential prime minister since Blair. How many of the cabinet do you reckon have the balls to stand up to Brown? Mandleson certainly and possibly Straw and Harman. That's all I can think of.

Thatcher was the same wasn't she? And I think it should be that way. The PM can take advice from cabinet but they are the one who should have the final say on things. If any PM kept ignoring their cabinet and doing things which made no sense they could be challenged for the leadership and removed.

According to some of his own party, Gordon Brown has run roughshod over the opinions of those in the cabinet several times in the past and has exhibited "I know best" behaviour frequently. So I'm not so sure I agree with that statement.

The problem here isn't the system of cabinet but rather spineless MPs in cabinet more interested in keeping their job than doing their job. If we went to a directly elected Prime Minister then we would need to enact controls over how much power they had and how they could exercise it. Our political system just isn't set up for that sort of thing.

And who chooses the cabinet? Why would you choose an underling that could undermine your leadership?

Right now we have an intolerable situation where self-regulation has failed (again!), and the people who have failed to regulate themselves have now decided that they are the ones to sort it out. Who watches the watchers? The Lords can have no authority while they are a) hereditory peers, or b) appointed by parliament. The only solution is an elected House of Lords and subsequent repeal of the parliament act.

Tories would destroy the country even more so. Labour are the lesser of two evils.

I've voted for the Green Party, in the hope that they'll get the minority MEP seats rather than the BNP or UKIP. I don't agree with anything the Green Party stand for, except for maybe wanting to increase minimum wage, but anything to keep those thugs out is worth it.

Which planet have you been on for the last eleven years ?

Probably on earth, probably in the UK, probably whilst the UK enjoyed one of the longest sustained periods of grow for decades, whilst probably understanding this recession was caused by global economics, probably whilst realizing the Torries are even MORE pro-free market economics, probably realizing that's what CAUSED the greedy bankers to let this happen.

This one. I've met David Cameron in person, and believe me, he's all smiles for the camera. If they got into power, they'd do much worse than Labour have done over the past decade.

And what dangerstat said. The past decade has seen massive economic growth and improvement in public services. You'll find people are A LOT better off now than they were in the mid 90s and Labour have had a massive part in that.

Exactly how do you come to that conclusion? Please provide evidence that the Tories have ever "destroyed the country", and why you think that the current tory party would be worse than a party that has had power for far too long, has shown itself to be corrupt and in complete comtempt of the electorate, not to mention their passion for turning this country into a police state despite EVERYONES objections and the astronomical costs in a time of recession. Oh yeah, and the fact that they have destroyed our economy and Britains reputation for economic security, all whilst seeing the longest ever period of economic growth thanks in large part to the actions of the tory party before labour came to power. But at least they gave us loads of CCTV cameras right?

I'm just appaled that there are so many fools who allow their own idiotic preconceptions to outweigh the facts of the situation. If you see another Labour term, all you will get is less civil rights, more debt, higher taxes, more centralisation, more corruption and more misery. If you think that this is better than a tory government they frankly you and the labour party deserve each other.

LOL at you two. Labour have been in power over eleven years. Yes we sustained a strong growth in our economy on the back of what the Tories did before hand.

If you're so right, I suspect we'll have a Labour government at the next general election.......NOT !
