I'm in the market for a new guitar and the guitar I've become interested in is the Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II:

Basically I got to this guitar by taking a liking to the original ultra and then finding that theres a newer addition with this potentially excellent acoustic side to it, as well as having the excellent hollow chamber body from the original.

First of all I will say I know very little about the ins and outs of guitars (the tech talk) but I've been playing 7 years and I know what sounds good to me!

The styles of music I will be playing range from classic rock like 'Journey' to modern metal, like 'Darkest Hour' and the more mellow bands like 'Dashboard Confessional'. So quite a range in tones really.

If anyone can give opinions on this guitar, or recommend a different guitar to me I would be really grateful! Budget is a maximum as £600.

Cheers :)

Look for a guy on ebay called chingo123 he sells excellent japanese made les pauls, Tokia Burny edwards etc. Get one of these never a korean/chinese made lp.

I have a fantastic Burny custom from him, its amazing cost about £500 after import tax and i got it about a week after auction. He closed the bid for me too, top man and great reputation amongst les paul players. Seriously the jap made les pauls rock and equal Gibsons, of which i own 2.

Good luck.

Hey thanks, so looking into it these were actually manufactured in the 80's? So they're essentially second hand? Or am I grabbing the wrong end of the stick?!

Yeah most will be classed as second hand, but they are 1000x better than epiphones and some Gibsons, they are proper Les pauls, and they are a bargain for the money. The Tokia love rocks are in particular awesome and very close to vintage Gibson specs. If your after a les paul and you cant afford a Gibson, this in my opinion is your best option. Maybes someone else can chip in?

Chingo is a very honest seller and what you see in the pictures is what you get and most are in great condition. Basicly if its made in japan, your getting an awesome LP.

You should hear that Burny in clean, its jaw droppingly good. Dirty itll rip your face off, but roll back the volume and your in bluesy dream land. Love it. Any questions ask me.

£600 can actually buy Gibson. Not a pretty one, but you can get used BFG and Studios in perfect shape for the money. They were only £650 new including case when dollar was in poopers last year.

Personally, i've played a gibson studio in a shop, and would rather have my epi standard any day of the week, which was half as expensive

You must have played a bad one then, cos thats just not happening mate.

I know, right? Why have low spec Mercedes SUV, when you can buy SsangYong for half the price. ;)

Anyway, the current low end of the lineup still includes Studio Faded models, which come with Burstbuckers Pros from LP Standard. That's £200 out of £650 in pickups alone. Not too bad.

Actullay yeah if you dont fancy importing one from Chingo123 (which is well worth it) I would go for a Gibson Les Paul studio faded, they are awesome with the burstbucker pros.

oooo that actually looks real nice especially in the worn brown. It's definately added to the potential list. Just need a couple more suggestions, because what I plan to do is travel to a decent guitar shop that actually stocks these (nothing decent local) and try them out and see what suits best. Thanks guys!
