Hi guys,

An odd one this. I need to find an insurance policy to cover a single tandem sky diving jump - ie, health insurance etc. The person its for has travel insurance which will NOT cover sky diving, so needs to buy a days worth of insurance to cover this sport.

Does this sort of product exist? It must be world cover. Any suggestions on where to look or how much this is likely to cost etc?

Cheers!

I have absolutely no idea. Is it? I've just had instructions to sort it out after I pointed out it wasn't covered under her policy :p

STA insurance did mine when i went travelling. They covered all sorts of water sports which aren't usually covered by normal holiday insurance. so worth a look.

Just looked and they cover skydiving on their budget package. Might be worth a phonecall to find out exactly what sorts of skydiving are covered.

Looked perfect until..

When abroad no medical fees or repatriation costs are covered

Which seems to make it entirely pointless. It's medical cover I'm after. Last thing I want is her to break her leg when landing or something equally daft as her travel insurance wont cover the medical bills as sky diving is specifically excluded.

its down under, they don't 'do' insurance over there :p

in all seriousness when i was looking many companies will charge an absolute fortune for this sort of cover, so like most i didn't bother.

with regards to the leg breaking thing, you just lift your legs up and your instructor breaks the fall.

I'll find my old insurance policy when I get home if you want. It was a policy that was given to me as an instructor, but I'm sure the underwriters will still be valid.

Have you done a search for extreme sports insurance cover?

This is absolutely perfect :) Many thanks, it is exactly what I am after.

I am suprised at how expensive it is, does this reflect the level of risk with this activity? How risky is tandom sky diving for a complete beginner?

prob more reflective of the costs involved in the event of an accident as opposed to the likelyhood of having one

There's no such thing as beginners in Tandems. Tandems in the UK have to have a minimum of 800 jumps and be certified. Then you still have to do a lot of test jumps before being signed off.

Yea I meant she is a beginner and she will presumably tandem with a pro?

Ahh yes, I see what you meant sorry. Quite right, he'll be a pro (at least I bloody hope so!!) so yes it'll be her first tandem, I just never call a 1st time tandem a beginner, but either way she'll have a lot of fun! :D Where is she jumping?

Biggest tip I could ever give someone doing this for the first time.... take some ear plugs! If you ever feel pressure in your ears when your plane is landing then times that by a thousand, I was in real pain for days after.

Apart from that it's about the best fun you'll ever have with your trousers on! :D
