Getting a new graphics card..

so what would be better GTX 275 896MB or 4890?

Well personally i went for a GTX 275. they seem to clock well above a gtx 285's speeds and then (apart from the 448-bit memory bus) you have the fastest single gpu out there. Also there are some nice extra physx effects with nvidia cards in mirrors edge if your into that sort of thing.

The 1000mhz 4890 can match the gtx 285 in some instances but overall the 285 is still faster.

Also now GTX 275's are only £18 more than the 4890.

dunno what 2 do i can wait a little bit.
but kind of need 1 asap as my sons having my 8800Gt Oc2 Bfg,so thats the only thing i need 2 get his comp up and running.

Hehe, i'm in a similar situation - giving my little sister my BFG 9800GTX and getting the asus 4890 to replace it - its gonna be a nice upgrade :)

lol yeah the 4890 does seem nice just bit unsure as want the prices of the nvidas 2 come down a bit really as next gen is not far off

Aye, I did have a gander at Nvidia's offerings, but they're seemingly so much more expensive for the same "class" of card if that makes any sense.

That Asus card does look pretty sweet. I'd be interested in noise levels tbh as that's a really important factor for me.

The Asus 285 gtx is very quiet (the quietest graphics card i've had come to think of it). Not sure about the 4890 but heard that it's not exactly discrete!

And that's another issue, noise is a hugely important factor. I suppose with e.g. the Asus though I could create a third mode with lots of underclocking involved. For when I just watch a video or surf the web.

Some graphics cards already underclock themselves under 2D usage to reduce power consumption and heat generation. To be fair, you could underclock any card, not just the Asus.

I personally would never base any purchase decision on forum banter, do some research: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/

..possibly down the line when I get more funds.

The thing is - I'll be playing the latest games (on an unregular basis); the last one was Mirror's Edge, so a card will still need some oompf in it.

I will be connecting it up to a 22" CRT @ 1600x1200 with as much AA as possible, and that's probably going to be a constant in the forseeable future.

Am I right in thinking with just the one monitor as above, I don't really need to be looking at the cards with more memory, less will suffice. That is - will an e.g. 4870 512MB suffice and its larger 1024MB brother be excessive?

Are ATI/AMD's cards the way to go? They seem to be cheaper (more bang per buck?) than Nvidia's offerings atm unless I have it wrong.

I use to own a ATI 4870 ..

Using the ATI 4870 with a Intel 8500 at 1024x960 I clocked up a nice 963fps on Quake3 demo benchmark, I use to run Crysis Max Settings no problems.. on 21" Monitor..

So a 4870 would be fine on your Monitor..

Quake 3 is a very out dated test, cira 1999. What resolution with Crysis?

I know Q3 is a bit long in the tooth, but its still worthy of a quick test.
Crysis I was running 1680x1050 [all settings very high]
For a small extra kick have a look here:
