How do I get an untaxed car home?

I've always taxed with an online printout (E-car insurance) they were a bit hesitant at first, and had to get the manager to have a look, but still accepted it - this was from a crap printer :p

Last 2 cars I bought with no tax, and just driven them back, even past a bunch of motorbike coppers; with the added blue side lights that the car had (I changed them on the same day, once I got the car home and taxed it :p )

Best bet, print it off at work if you have a laser printer? :D

Book an MOT at a testing station near your home you can then LEGALLY drive it with out mot OR tax back to the mot station and phone the mot station once your back and explain how your car wont start and you wont be able to make it ;) but you will still need insurance

Maybe you tax it online, also? I've just received my tax reminder and it specifically states no printouts (which, like you say is useless as a lot of online companies don't send you a policy, it's printed yourself)...

But, I suppose if your insurance is online you'd by your tax online, too.

No, I taxed it at the post office as I always have with my previous cars - why would I print out the certificate to tax it online?

I don't recall seeing any reference to no printouts, I think you'll find thats actually no photocopies - I may be wrong though.

Not sure that will work if you get stopped 100 miles from the MOT station.

theres no law on how far you can drive it, its simply to and from an MOT

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.

From the actual DVLA site mentions nothing about distance

I had exactly the same situation last week and had a thread about it. All the PO's rejected my faxed Insurance Cert and covering letter. Your options are:

1) Tax it online and get the seller to post on the tax disc to you.
2) Wait for your insurance docs and tax it yourself
3) Just drive it and hope you don't get pulled or have an accident!

Would your insurance be invalid if you had an accident and the car was untaxed?

You misunderstood me, sorry R420. I replied to you as you said how would you tax your car if the PO wouldn't accept a printout and I meant you could have done it online. I imagine the PO, quite laxly, assume that if people are buying their insurance online they will be happy to tax it online, also.

Get yourself insured on the car, buy tax online and I'm pretty sure you're able to drive the car without the disc - but you'll have to explain if you get pulled.

Wait for the disc to come through the post and then put it on.

You could still get done. The offence is failure to display proof of tax, not failing to have tax. Copper might let you off, but I wouldn't count on it.
