MONACO Grand Prix 2009 - Race 6/17 Official GP Thread

Anyone notice the underside of Mclarens front wing? Lots of channels, almost diffuser looking.

Quite an unusual item isn't it?

I'll predict Kimi first into the first corner (not that inspired) but Button to have him after the first stop and then to lead to the flag, usual chance of Monaco pile up or two, 2 sc sessions with Vettel & Alonso benefiting from the carnage.

Podium - Button, Kimi (I think it's time to drop the choc ice jokes) and Rubens.

Lewis - not sure, he's light and loves this circuit but is at risk from any carnage.

Even if he does - Button will just do the sensible thing to stick with him and then put in some fast laps when Kimi pits to overtake him when he pits. Not like he hasnt used that same tactic to good effect...

Monaco is difficult, but moreso dangerous circuit to pass - one mistake and theres little chance of findinga run off area and the like...

Hell when I saw the Button lap for pole from the in-car view I just cant imagine doing anything like that in real life  - it really is blind faith that you have the technology under you to do what you expect when you expect it...

ps3ud0

Ferrari don't have the best reliability record this year, so don't count on Kimi not having engine or KERS problems.

He won't run light in the race. He can put fuel in. Would be stupid to run light near the back of the grid, You'll get held up by the slower cars, and then pit and be even further back. Not even Ferrari on a bad day would do that strategy :p

True, and strange it was seeing two engines let go in not particularly demanding situations. I do think engine trouble is less likely here, though Ferrari don't seem to be as bulletproof as they once were.

What was everyone's take on the Hamilton/Massa offs today? Related to KERS or not? The commentators seemed to think so, but LH was pretty resigned to just a driver error on his part, he didn't seem on the best line in there. Perhaps a combination of the two?

No luck for Hamilton today.
Atleast its not thought a questionable decision.
I guess getting the penalty when he was in 16th anyway isn't as bad as if he had made it to the sharp end of the grid.
He just needs to avoid getting stuck behind the Trulli train.

Just a thought - Hamilton is going to be at the back of the GRID, with a car that is potentially ~2 seconds a lap quicker than some of the guys in front of him, along with KERS we might get to see some overtaking at Monaco :p

I will be amazed if after the first lap there is much passing outside of the pits. Any decent driver should be able to keep a 2 second per lap faster car behind at monaco. Even Bernoldi managed it so I don't have much hope that Lewis will do much passing on the track unless he manages to completely take someone by surprise.

Well, the way I see it, good run behind into the tunnel+kers+LH super-late breaking=possible pass/carnage? It's definitely not impossible.

Have to say though, faster car at the back usually results in tears when trying to pass all the slow cars. However, even force india were looking pretty good today. Can't see Toyota being here this time next year if that carries on though.

Yeah I suppose it's possible with kers but if the defending driver plants the car correctly all that will happen is the car out brakes itself runs to far over the kerbs and has to yield.

Should be interesting.

Yeah any good defensive driver can just take the inside the whole way down to the chicane, but perhaps if they're a bit late on the power or slow out LH can get a complete jump on them before the breaking zone.

On the other hand, Coulthard without KERS Vs Hamilton with KERS? I'd say it's more likely at least, who knows until tomorrow though.

Might be worth starting from the pit lane for Hamilton though, if there is any first corner carnage he won't have to try to get through it, obviously that depends on him being able to pass on track though :p

Most amazing thing is how quickly Mclaren and ferrari have turned the cars around. Especially when you consider the lack of testing this year. It shows the strength of both of those teams to edge right back despite not testing 5 days per week. I think Lewis would have been on the front two rows as well had he not had an accident.

Then you have toyota who are going backwards at an alarming rate.

its nothing to do with turning it around, its simply that both the ferrari and mclaren have a rubbish amount of downforce, so theyre slow at normal tracks, but at monaco downforce hardly matters.

People are talking about Kimi getting past Button, hes got to be very careful of Rubens behind him. With Vettel weighing about the same as a mouse mat, I wouldn't put it past him flying off the line!

This race is shaping up to be a great one just like the others we've had this season. By far, its been the most entertaining season for years!

Thats coming from someone whos got £50 on the Iceman for the title, oh well, atleast the entertainment is making up for the loss :p

Of course downforce matters at monaco, it's outright power that doesn't matter as much at monaco.

I think you are in for a surprise how much both have come on in the next race.

I still don't see that, Oz has been the only race so far thats been very good. The rest as usual have been as boring as before. Naturally having different cars at the front has shaken it up but paint those red and grey and the actual racing has been almost as dull as ever.

The gap front to back is certainly closer though :)
