ATI Radeon 5870 and 5870X2 specs revealed?

I could say the same for CUDA & physx.

So what's the point in even making such a statement in the first place.

Because when you spend money on a pair of GTX260s, you're going to defend them at every turn.

If you search around these forums you'll notice I've been fairly vocal about both the strengths AND weaknesses of both ATI and nVidia

LOL! :D

If you're a game developer, then the future of the PC as a gaming platform terrifies me to my very core.

^^You work in game development dude? Just curious to know what its like, tried to get into testing a few times but no joy. Not surprising since millions want to get their foot in the door. I gave up the idea of doing that a while ago though.

I don't work in it currently - I previously did some level design for idsoftware and due to the links made about that time I've managed to get in on closed testing of many titles.

^^Nice one m8. Probably a bit technical for me to be able to do, though I do like the idea of story and pen to paper / initial thoughts etc, early stages of design. I like listening to John Carmack talk on videos / interviews, can't understand all of it though, lol. Seems like an interesting dude.

Sorry Rroff i havn't seen anything from you lately but constant criticism of ati and defence for nvidia and that is what has made me take many of your comments with a pinch of salt. I have an ati card now and i am loving it it is the best card i have had for a while but i switch betwen all companys based on what i feel is best for me at the time (though lately i have had my gfx cards bought for me) i have no loyalty to one or the other and feel thats how it should be to keep them both on their toes. I see good and bad in both camps in the gfx card area and neither one has a clear claim to either a victory or a failing as most of the time they are on a level par with each other.

It varies depending on where you look, but guesswork based on previous releases would state somewhere between late October/early November, which would also make sense as thats around the release time for Windows 7, which would make people have a new OS & a new GPU at the same time

Thing is as i understand it and may be wrong DX11 is all sorted so ati could release a card sooner then the win7 release and have a bunch of people ready for whatever new stuff comes with 11. Given the rash of price cuts on 4xxx cards lately i would say some sort of release is going to happen sooner rather then later.

There could be good practical benefits for ati to release a card soon that way any problems could be ironed out in time for the refresh and maybe when win7 is released as i stil think thats more likely next jan then earlier but MS might surprise us all.

I hope ATi up there quality on the cards this time round. I had a 4850 and was more than pleased with it, and am aware the GTX 200s where expensive cards when they came out, never the less, Nvidia seems to have ATi licked when it comes to how the cards look/feel.

Which lets face it, although not crucial, its always a bonus to have, especially with all these windowed cases you lot seem to have :D

And could also in part contribute to the very reason why NV cost more on avg.

How something might look in my windowed case is a long long second to how it performs for me when i am using it and i suspect that applys to most people. I would be happier if ati implemented a better cooler then they currently use but thats about it.

My GTX295 looks nothing really special, I dont really care much about the look of it, even though I have the Antec case which does have a side window, so I can see everything in side. I must admit my CPU Cooler does look really huge, not that I should be surprised with the cooling ability that it has. With the ATI cards, this time they should really sort there cooler out, as long as they can make it cooler & also quieter then they are good to go ;)

Just got my Asus card. Have to say the packaging looks classy! Even comes with a leather mousemat lol!

Anyway I have just tried to find the max stable clock on stock voltage (1.312V), and it seems to be 935MHz which is quite impressive tbh. Not tried messing with memory or voltage yet. Soon the card will be under water with a nice VRM cooler and we'll see what she can really do.

Not bad for straight out of the box! Another thing to note is that the cooler seems identical to the 4870 reference, but GPU temps seem to be much improved. Idles are still not that impressive (high 50s), but it was staying 65ish under load which is not bad at all.

The first picture says "Your VGA car" :p

My card should arrive Tuesday :)

If the ASUS mobo are anything to go by, then the ASUS GPU cards should be something special, especially if they decide to add there special overclocking abilities to the cards as well

Im tempted to say that any new cards might just be out sooner rather than later, because has anyone noticed that the makers of the latest top flight cards have got rather shorter recently? There used to be several makers, now there is just a few left on both sides of the fence
