I have just been given this by somebody that was throwing it out! The camera body is a little battered but I'm told it works OK. It came with a few extras and I wanted some help identifying it and knowing it will work on my 1000D.

Canon EOS 500n Body
Canon Ef 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 II Lens - This fits and works but is it better than my 18-55mm IS kit lens?
Sigma APO Zoom 50-200mm 3.5-4.5 Lens (Very heavy and old looking!)
Jessops 58mm UV filter (pretty sure this is OK to use on any of my lenses)
Hoya 58mm PL-CIR (some kind of tinted filter?)
Set of Marumi 49mm +1/+2/+4 i think filters??
Strange metal bendy rod type thing that has a sprung button that pushes out a small metal rod at the other end about 50CM long

If anybody could help identify what the above bits are and if they are worth using with my 1000D I would greatly appreciate it!

Ahh, don't worry! Have figured most of it out now except the Marumi filters and the rod thing. Also the Sigma lens wont fit either camera!

The bendy cord will be a shutter release cord, screws into the shutter button on old cameras, helps reduce movement when on a tripod, quite handy (if it fits!)

and I guess the filters are close up filters, basically magnifying lenses, so you can focus on things closer, can be handy

As stated above, the rod will be an old-style cable release.
The filters are either horrid close-up filters, or possibly a set of ND filters. Kind hard to say which from your description, but at 49mm you'll be lucky to fit them to any lens of practical use.

Thanks for clearing it up for me! Not sure wether to try out the SLR, has a few rolls of film with it too. I think the filters are close-up ones actually. They seem to magnify stuff when I look through them. Is it worth keeping the 28-80mm lens? I already have an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm, I guess the 28-80mm could be a good everyday lens when I don't want to carry around different ones with me?

Depends how the IQ holds up against your kit lens really, and if AF etc work correctly with no errors. Trial and error is the best I can recommend unfortunately.
