I dont really know what to say, as i don't generally ask for advice on fixing my computer.
Ive been using windows since 3.1, and have recently just bought a 1k laptop with Vista, (i am an xp diehard) however it was working excellently when i bought it, but now seems buggy as ****.
I have every adware, spyware, (spybot) virus scanner (nod32) up the nile, i have checked every startup process and service that is installed, yet it just seems to recently just not want to load quickly.
It doesnt have bugger all installed on it.

Whats the general consensus about vista is it ME2? Is it just playing silly games with me, shall i wipe it and give up on vista and install 7 or get some balls and find out what has beaten me? :)

P.s Is there a program that shows me what loads and in what order when i start my comp.

Vista is a great OS. I'm probably going to get flamed for that statement, but there's really nothing wrong with it if you have a fairly decent system to run it.

Have you got SP2 or at least SP1? SP1 makes a huge difference. Have you defragged recently, got enough hard disk space? What are you system specs?

What virus scanners have you got running? Is it Vista service pack 1? What are the specs of the laptop?

Lots of people would have you think Vista is rubbish, but in fact as of SP1 its very good.

Sometimes less is more ;)

Do you really need so much security software running? An antivirus and some common sense is usually more effective and nicer on your system :p

Vista these days is a very good OS. It's unlikely that it's the cause of your issues, especially if they're new.

How much RAM does the system have?

What exactly doesn't load quickly? The OS itself? Programs? Which programs?

Vista is a resource hog....that's about the only problem. I have it installed on my 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo laptop, and boot takes ages, and there's a load of hard disk thrashing for several minutes at startup. I expect W7 would run better.

Yeah the service packs do make a massive difference in the performance of vista, And as Pho said SP1 especially, so make sure you have all the updates on it.

As mentioned vista is great and is better than the rest (bar w7). It got a bad rep due to poor drivers at the start and a few bugs which where fixed by ms.
Out of the box it was the best os ms had released (remember all the issues with xp pre sp1/2), but at the time probably not up with xp sp2 (which had 5/6 years of updates to perfect it) but its now superior to xp.

That pretty much nails the situation, really.

That isn't resource hogging, that's SuperFetch. It's one of the best features of Vista.

p8600 2.4
4g ram
nvidia 9650gt
500gig hdd

I kid you not the wierd thing is that it was perfect till about a week ago then crappy slow, it just doesnt add up. "system" in control panel doesnt show SP1 or 2, how else would i know???? Might be why.
(the issue i have whne i say it slow is tha Nod32 used to pop up instantly, and dissapear and firefox could be loaded straight away, now i have a loading cirle for half a minute sometimes. Yet looking at task manager so no cpu usage, nor memory usage over 35mb.)

It pretty much brand new, so defrag is pointless.
Il just try harder, im sure il find the problem. I was just unsure, never had the long term pleasure of Vista of know whether it was just a crap OS.

OK well your spec if fine for vista, and its got to be some issue causing it.
It shows the service pack in system just like xp so it looks like you don't have either installed. However I wouldn't think not having the sp installed would cause it to slow down after a week

Cheers, i thought as much.
I will install sp1 and 2 and uninstall anything i dont like the looks of. At least i know its a prog problem rather than a turd OS, thats all i wanted to know really. It means i'll win eventually.:)

...not when it sits there, preventing the system from loading properly and causing Opera and FireFox to take 15-20 seconds to start. I turned it off and it's still slow...lord knows why. It could do with a reformat I guess but I cba.

Regarless, it is a resource hog.....W7 shows that with how much less RAM it uses.

There's your problem. Installing every adware, spyware and virus scanner there is, is not a good idea. It WILL slow your computer down.

All you need is ONE virus scanner, either Nod 32 or Kaspersky.

I meant that as in i have enough, i only have spybot s&d and nod32, thats it. They loaded perfectly and damn quickly untill a day ago, but for some reason, neither find a change that would slow them down. I might system restore.

Stop turning your computer off. Use hibernate. Every time you switch it off it has to reload the superfetch cache (I believe). If you hibernate instead, you avoid this problem entirely.

My machine is a year old and Vista wipes the floor with XP on it.
