Premiership Last Day *spoilers*

Whilst I'm sorry for the genuine newcastle fans, this is probably the best thing that could have happened to them.

What they need now is to give a manager an actual chance to build a team that they've chosen themselves and have a period of stability. I might be slightly biased as an Everton fan but that's exactly what our chairman did with David Moyes. He inherited a squad of expensive has beens (Gazza, Ginola, etc) and slowly built the team up year by year. One year we finished 18th but the chairman refused to sack Moyes and now we've had 3 consecutive top 6 finishes and we're in the FA Cup final after beating 3 of the teams above us on the way.

If Shearer can be convinced to stay and the fanbase don't turn on him if/when have a rough first season then Newcastle might just come out of this a better club.

Kept turning over to the Newcastle game second half. They didn't look interested at all. Our kids had more fight in them and they weren't playing for anything.

I think they knew they were gone and just wanted it over with to be fair.

I think the biggest kick in the balls for newcastle fans is still to come, when the likes of Ameobi and Barton start handing in transfer requests because they think they are too good to play in the Championship.

Newcastle should be selling Ameobi cos he ISN'T good enough to play in the championship :p

The squad needs a clearout from top to bottom it's infested with mercenaries and crap foreigners.

Sir Bobby got the sack in the first month of the season after finishing 5th the season before........reckon most fans would be happy with 15th this morning let alone 5th.

all the local papers have put the blame fully on ashley today. strangely not mentioning all the pressure the supporters put on him to sack/hire certain people...

Newcastle

15 players on £50k+ a week, most of which are a waste of space

9 Managers in 8 seasons or something like that (as mentioned on MOTD)

They had one decent run in the top 4 7 years ago and still think they are a massive club (have they even made Europe since or any decent cup run?) - they have done **** all for the EPL, and its time for them to give new blood a try

Horrendously badly run club that imo need taking down a peg or two, scrapped and completely rebuilt from the ground up.

You've just quoted random statistics, how does that explain your happiness at a club being relegated?

How does Newcastle having 15+ players on 50k+ have any bearing on your opinion about us going down? I'm assuming your not a toon supporter so it's not even your money that's being spent.

Again your glad we have been relegated because we have had 9 managers?

Our average league position over the 16 years we have been in the EPL is 6/7th.

Our last Europe stint was 3 seasons ago.

We have had 2 periods in our EPL history where we were genuine title contenders, mid 90's with Keegan and then again between 2001 and 2004 with Sir Bobby.

As for the boring over used 'big club' comment. We have a 50k+ seater stadium which is filled week in week out with only a small amount of our HUGE fan base.

We are the 13th richest club in the world.

We haven't won anything for ages that much is true, but we are a massive club in other ways.

What do you mean by 'done **** all for the EPL'?? What have other clubs done that Newcastle have failed to do? I don't get that. We provide a fantastic venue for travelling teams and fans, surrounded by a great city. And we have arguably provided some of the EPL and Europe's greatest/most memorable football matches.

I'm sure rival fans will prefer an away fixture at Burnley next season

And lastly. Every year 3 new teams (or new blood) get a chance in the EPL...with or without Newcastle in it, us going down has no bearing on that.

Sorry newcastle this year in truth, the moment you binned big sam, it was either make or break.

There was never going to be a middle ground with ashley in charge, a man like keggan kicking off the season and that god awfull backroom setup at the club.

It wasn't working on the pitch, you were doomed.

Sorry to say it, but conference teams have been run better than newcastle have this year, it's shocking the way a club worth multiple millions has allowed itself to become a laughing stock.

You can't control footballs great pyramid, the fantastic thing about the game (forest fan, so i know) but there's shooting yourself in the foot, the people in charge of running the club this season should hang their heads in shame, total embarassment.

Shearer was the final nail in it... this season over more than any i can remember in recent times, the coach, manager has been the all important factor in whats gone on... the teams that have failed for the most part have been the ones with the weakest coaches, where the tony pullis's, phill browns, hodgsons, along with the dead certs of this world have succeeded with tatical nounce, the southgates, inces, roy keanes and scolari's have failed.

Shearer was never going to do it, you saw the game yesterday (ignoring the rest) it was sad to watch... then i could feel something for the fans, so much to fight and play for in the game... one goal!!!

Toothless because the players didn't have a clue what they should have been doing on the pitch, the fans could only call shearer and dowie into question over that.

Quoted for the truth. I couldn't agree more. Shearer had no chance, to be quite honest the relegation isn't a surprise I've watched it coming for a while and so has Shearer.

But no one could have saved us. No one would have wanted to take that task on other than him. Judging him on 8 games for a club in complete disarray would be short sighted. I'm hoping he stays on and we have a period of stability with someone that actually gives a toss about the club.

Ashley isn't the only person to blame, there have being a lot of things go wrong at the club.

This season, Newcastle's luck ran out.

I'm not sure Shearer would be the best pick for a Championship Newcastle. He's got plenty of contacts in the Premiership, but he'd be completely untested when it comes to scouting lower league clubs and finding talent, some of his tactics seemed odd at times, and to be perfectly frank, he didn't seem to have been that good at motivating what he already had.

The comparisons between Newcastle and Hull City, as I've read quite a bit recently on Hull forums, are quite interesting. City are essentially a team of average players who've been motivated above their level, whilst the general impression of Newcastle is of a fairly talented team (definitely more so than City, at least) that just doesn't seem to care.

In my opinion, the smartest move for Ashley would be offload almost everyone he can, get in Steve Coppell, and give him at least three season of consolidation, with some decent financial backing. Shearer could stick around to help offload the deadwood, or even as a number two, but I don't think he's worth the risk for a top spot yet.

Phil Brown himself said on the TV yesterday at the end of the match that he essentially has a team of Championship players that performed way above themselves in the first half of the season and simply ran out of legs in the second half.
