All I can think is he overcooked it and went up the bank, about the only way I can see that he'd roll it so it lands that heavily on the engine bay.

Cars don't just compact in an accident.
You've seen pictures of my Ren5 haven't you, I dropped that onto it's roof and only damaged a bit of it.
Looks like the Golf flipped, had the brunt of the force from flipping land on the bonnet and carried on flipping/rolling onto the wheels, piroetting off the front wing basically. Which is why the roof isn't damaged, but there are scuffs on the sides of the car.

When i rolled my c2 GT i came down on the Offside back pillar {C pillar im sure} and it wasnt too bad, thn came down on the A pillar on the nearside and it took more of a bash than the back.
I Dintha have a roll cage and got out ok, No windows left not a panel intact 2 wheels and suspension riped off and i walked away and to work the next day
Looks like a damn clean GTI, shame its now got a scratch T-Cut wont budge and is a 5 door

Some good photos there. I was going to say I'm looking forward to the next time I do a day there until I saw the crash pics. Still it's pretty safe as long as you don't do anything stupid and keep your distance from other cars.
