I'm thinking of travelling to watch finals of British Open Squash finals at Sport City Manchester.

There seem to be loads of Hotels in city centre area. However, i don't know the area and wondering if its regarded as safe to walk from city centre to Sport City and back again?

Its along a fairly well lit road from what i remember but not a particularly nice area. It works out about a 30-40 minute walk from Picadilly Gardens in the centre to sports city.

There is a well populated bus route though from the centre to sports city which may be worth looking into. As theres a lot to do in Manchester when your not watching Squash.

Not sure about Hotels nearby though i dont think there are any

Getting from the city centre to sports city via bus is very easy and perfectly safe.

The route is designed to handle matchday traffic, so it really isn't a problem :)

Which hotels are you thinking of in the city centre?

Not sure, i'll probadly go for cheaper ones.

Really depends what you class as cheaper.

If its sub £50 (for a single) then you are probably best with the travelodges etc, in which case, just find the closest.

City centre hotels that arn't the usual suspects (which lets face it, always do cheaper better) really need £100+ pn spending on them.

Afraid my only manchester hotel experiences are at the Midland and the Malmaison. However I live in the city centre, so if you want any advice etc about where to go, fire away.

Slightly off topic where abouts in the centre are you? I live on Tib Street

I've stayed at the Radison on Peter street which was expensive and was fairly nice but not the best.

There are plenty on Portland street worth looking at though i think there is a Premier Inn/Travelodge on Great Ancoats street which is probably the closest but doesnt look very nice from the outside

I recently moved, used to live just on the edge of ancoats nearly opposite the (now closed) ILVA.

Now live just behind the MEN, got to listen to AC/DC from a distance the other week. Was the most frustrating few hours I have had in a very long time! (failed to get tickets), so close yet so far :(

Ah we almost moved into Jefferson place in the Green Quarter. Fairly glad we didnt now then.

Though we do get a pile of noise from all the bars around us

I lived in Barton place in the green quarter for 6 months too :) Not really tha noisy tbh, im much closer to the MEN now than I was then. Only issue I had with the GQ was their shoddy lifts and the backstreets you needed to drive in to get to the entrance, other than that, I loved the place.

Anway, OT, sorry op!

Not sure but when I recently went to manchester for a gig we stayed at the etap was £32 for a room for the night (sleeps 3, 1 double + 1 bunkbed) car was £3 I think for the night. Use the saving on that for a taxi to and from the event.

The Etap hotel is in salford quays (if its the same one i'm thinking of though i can't think of any others. Not much around there though there is a Chiquitos and Frankie & Bennys right near by

I never hear anything from the MEN !

I'm in the building over the road from the arena loading bay and can't hear anything if my windows are shut, your windows must suck :p

regarding the OP there is a sports city travellodge I think, if not any of the hotels on the Ancoats side of the city centre are an easy walk away or you can hop on a bus from picadilly gardens

I stood outside, behind the stairs going into the MEN :)

Windows are high quality metal framed double glazed units thanks ;)

To the OP: It's worth remembering that Manchester really isnt that big, its a very compact city, with even outlying areas such as Sports city easily available if you dont mind walking a few miles, or taking the bus. Getting from Piccadilly gardens is very easy, as has been said.

Treat yourself, stay in the Lowry ;) (think its about £150 pn)

Aye thats on the new Green Quarter development (if I am thinking of the same one), it looks very nice from the outside, kind of like Darth Vaders hotel :)

I don't know much about it though, i'd be suprised if it was cheap. Could be a good bet if it is though. Its about 10 minutes walk from Picadilly gardens, just in front of the MEN, so easy enough to walk to get a bus or just walk into the city centre/northern quarter for evening drinks/meal etc.

I'd be amazed if the park inn is open yet, not far off but they're still putting furniture in, the crowne plaza is recently opened and still on special offers though I think, at the end of rochdale road
