Sherlock Holmes - Guy Richie Trailer

I'm quite looking forward to this, solely for Robert Downey Jr. performance. And big hands for Jude Law. He looks really different from his typical look...

It looks like it might be quite entertaining but I rather wish they hadn't attached the Sherlock Holmes name to it. I'll just try to convince myself that it is nothing whatsoever to do with the detective stories and I might actually enjoy it.

pretty much this, it will probably be entertaining, but I have serious doubts about it as a sherlock holmes film

Yeah those b&w films are classic and I grew up watching them all.

This new version looks good although I'm not a big fan of Guy Ritchie films I think the saving grace here is the casting of Robert Downey Jnr who looks good in the role of Holmes.

Which of them is Holmes? The pictures/costumes are very conflicting. Downey's build is far more suited to the role of Watson, and Law's to Holmes, yet Law is too simple-looking to be Holmes, and Downey is the one with the look of wit about him. The costumes would suggest it is Law, and yet it doesn't ring true.

Either way, poor casting.

PS: Downey is a bloody yank, and therefore completely unsuitable for either role!

Downey Jr is Holmes and Law is Watson, neither fits the build particularly well as you say however I'd remind you of the advice that Laurence Olivier apparantly said to a young Dustin Hoffman "Dear boy, it's called acting".

Since Rachel McAdams is playing Irene Adler it would suggest something loosely based around A Scandal in Bohemia but going on the trailer alone it seems nothing like that story so it may well be a Holmes yarn in name only.

I was under the impression that this was more truthful to the original characters/stories than the other films and tv shows. E.g homles fist fighting, taking drugs some martial arts

I think Downey might quiet suit the charater actually and the trailer seems to show it works imo.

Time will tell i guess.

No its pretty much a comic book interpretation of Holmes with additional violence added in. The Jeremy Brett version of Holmes is in my eyes pretty close to the Holmes in the Books. In fact im currently just finishing reading "The Complete Sherlock Holmes".

I seem to recall some stat about revolvers only being aimed at someone around 6 times throughout all the Holmes stories and only around 3 times were shots actually fired during those times. There isn't a massive amount of violence by either Holmes or Watson in any of the stories, but there is mention of Holmes boxing and martial arts knowledge.

hmm, didnt inspire me at all, plus im not Jude Laws biggest fan

i'll still watch it but im not looking forward to it at all now :(

Guy has hardly been what you might call consistent with his movie making of late - in fact other than Lockstock and Snatch they have all been rubbish. Still no Madonna on the scene so it might actually be ok - but like others have said - he's killed what character Sherlock Holmes had and more importantly what made him so endearing.

I think it's a mistake to turn Sherlock into an action comedy.

Exactly.

I can't say in any of my wildest flights into fantasy would I have conceived of Sherlock Holmes as an action character. The film looks like it could be fun, but it's certainly not what I would have expected from the name; from Guy Ritchie yes.

I can't stand Jude Law, and I remain to be convinced about Robert Downey Jr, but then no one will replace Jeremy Brett as the definitive Holmes in my view.
