Hi all,

I'm going on holiday soon. Me and my mates decided to go to the city of Lisbon. Well it was them that decided.

Basically was wondering if any of you overclockers have been to this Portuguese City and if so what are good places to visit?

What are good things to do in this city?

lol and thanks

netby - I don't eat meat, eggs or fish am I totally screwed?

It'll be hard but doable if you prepare and buy from supermarkets.

Spend a couple of days in the new part of the city, a couple in the old town, outdoors drinking in the old town. Go to Cascais beach. I can't remember where else I went to when I was there.

Online and printed guides will have plenty of recommendations. Great place though - would go again.

Exit rapidly. I was there on Friday and foud it to be a hole.
I'm sure there are nice areas and things to do, but I liked it less than any other continental european city that I've ever visted.

Night life is good. A lot of places do pizza and pasta and list a menu on the door as usual. I made the most of the seafood though.

Headed to the downtown area, and took a tour bus to get a feel for the place. Found it to be a city of mainly traffic jams, sunglasses and tat hawkers and beggars.

if you like the beach ,go to Cascais
Sintra is also a lovely place ,with the beautiful Palácio da Pena worth visiting
also Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a must to see

of course Lisbon is an old ,old city ,full of history and monuments, from the times of the Roman Empire to the first century's of the domain of the Arabs and the middle age of the "Reconquista" from the Christian Kings

Don't go to Lisbon, it's genuinely horrible. You might think I'm exaggerating - I'm not, the place is a dump apart from one or two nice streets. Go somewhere else.

Went there about a month or so ago. Only stayed a day (was on a cruise ship) and unfortunately we docked on a Sunday - not good in a Catholic country hehe! It looked pretty enough, but didn't find much open so can't comment beyond that. Local taxi drivers weren't the friendliest either...

i went to Lisbon on a stag do (a sensible one) and tbh it is one of the best places I have ever been to! we went with a fluent portuguese speaker so it was a big benefit, I can highly recommend the old part of town (or was it the Latin quarter?). people have basically turned their front rooms into bars, the streets were packed with people to 4 or 5am, all very friendly, no trouble and pretty cheap. we also found a bar that had upside down cabbages as lamp shades - very bizarre!

we had planned to go to a big club on the waterfront with a pool ball inside on the second night, however after getting their we were told it was 100 euros to get in (each), so we tried a few other places only to be told they were similar, 50 - 100 euro minimum spend sort of the thing, so we sacked it off and went back to old bit of town and had a cracking time.

the only time we got ripped off was when we went to eat in the tourist parts and in the main town. all the food in the old quarter was fantastic, and cheap, including the famous "steak on a stone" which was a sight to behold.

i can recommend the port museum for cigars and er port for a good day out, we didn't find many establishments with ladies for pleasurable purposes though, but tbh we weren't really interested as we were having a good time without it. our hotel was fantastic, 4 star at around 60 euros a night, breakfast served until 12 lunchtime. the main square is pretty spectacular, big statues and old buildings and stuff.

summary - head to the latin (old?) quarter for a good, cheap night out, and the port museum for cigars.
