Do people still play LOTRO?

I played the trial but wasn't that impressed really, it's quite good but the lack of PvP and the graphics that just look like more toned up ones of runescape kind of put me off.

Certainly I could understand not liking the PvP if you are into Pvp...

But...graphics that look like more toned up ones of runescape?? I'm just not seeing the comparison???

Im looking into getting this game now too, was a WoW fan but I HATE the community on that game. Being older than when I first started playing (obviously) I have found that rather than the online community of WoW maturing with time it has gotten younger, nastier and generally so self involved so much so that outside of guilds it may as well be a 1 player console game.

SO anyway after that little rant is LOTRO the one for me? Looking for something a little more chilled out than WoW with some fun challenges and most importantly a mature and generally nice community. Or should I be looking for somewhere else for this?

Game still updating, but going to hop on Laurelin. Sounds like a lovely place :)

One thing; I don't particularly want to play hobbit, but if I roll elf or dwarf, can I go over to the hobbit area and level up there? And is this hard/easy to do (i.e. getting there).

Thanks :)

Oh my god, my exaggeration detector just exploded :D

Here's a few more completely-and-utterly-unlike-runescape shots, just to reinforce the point :

On the Laurelin server I have only ever come across one or two irritating characters - everyone else is brilliant, mature and really friendly. Great game.

Not terribly hard, but not in your face easy either. The first 5 levels or so of the game are in a kind of noobie instance, where you're locked in with the other new players running through a little introductory story arc. You can choose to skip this, but it's best to do it at least once, to introduce yourself to the basics.

Once that's over you're dumped in your racial starting area, and from there you have to find a stablemaster who has cheap travel to each racial hub. What class did you plan to start as, human, dwarf or elf?

Have started as a Elf, just doing a few quests around Thorin's Gate at the moment. Quite fun, and lovely visuals, even though I only have everything at 'High'.

For elves, once you finish the thorin's gate noob area, there's a stable master in Celondim where you're dumped, but I think you might have to go to the one in Duillond (up the road and over the bridge) to get the one that will take you to Michel Delving, which is the Hobbit hub.

Little update from my first day of play (yesterday).

Rolled a Minstrel and started on Laurelein - loving the game so far! Spent about 6 or 7 hours playing last night and got to level 11, had some fun messing around with various skills as well as just exploring the area. I like how quests aren't too grind/repetitive, a lot of them have story behind them as well as objectives. Prologue/Introduction was also great.

Visually, the game is very good (I have all settings on High, 1280 x 1024, 4 x AA) and the whole area looks beautiful and varied. The setting is brilliant.

Would type more... but want to play now =D Any others on Laurelin who don't mind having a chat, just message me/ add to friends - my name is Meledrielle.

Is their a launcher you can download and then download the entire game from that? A 7gb download with mozilla managing it doesn't sound to tempting if something goes wrong =/

Is it an open world so to speak? in WoW you have set areas, in LORTO can you say go anywhere in the shire and is it a large environment? As in to go from the shire to Mordor say would it take a hell of a long time if you were able to do so?

yeah - the launcher install is fairly small - it then manages the download and subsequent install for you.

Yeah it's a totally open world - you can walk and walk and walk. It's brilliant that way.
