You should be able to cancel it and get most of the 9 months back, they might charge you an admin fee though.
Are you replacing the car with another one?
If you are - call the insurance company and say "please change my cover to this car, registration number X111 XYZ"
If you are not - it will depend entirely on your insurance company as to what will happen. You may get a refund. You may have to "freeze" your policy. We won't know, they will.

It depends on your insurer and their small print. I've never experienced an unreasonable one, though.Does that mean ill have to still pay the full amount?
