Hi all,
has anyone upgraded from their trusty 6600 to the 9650? If so did they see a noticeable difference in fps for gaming, particularly online gaming? My q6600 doesn't seem to be a good clocker and every now and then it likes to reset itself. Either that or I am doing something wrong.

Cheers.

3.5GHz overclock for a q6600 is a pretty respectable overclock in my opinion. If you went for the q9650 you may be able to hit 4.0GHz so long as you can keep it cool. The yorkfields are also slightly faster clock-for-clock than the kentsfields. So you would get a little performance boost.

However, for the £287 a q9650 costs - I don't know if that small performance increase can be justified. For just a £100 more you could get an i7 920 and an x58 motherboard (reuse your DDR3 RAM). The i7 will give you a very definite performance increase and will happily overclock to 3.8GHz+.

Thanks for the info cmndr andi. Yeah I've already priced up a mobo and cpu in my mind, was around £400 for the i7 cpu and Asus board.

Pretty big performance gain if you get it up to 4 I guess, but personally I would save the money for a nice i7 rig in 6 months or something.

I went from a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz to Q9650 @ 4.4ghz and it ran sweet

However upgraded to i7 now and find it much better all round

what sort of temps are you getting?
and how is it cooled to get them?
Idles in the high 20s to low 30s and load it hits high 40s. And keep in mind those idle temps are with all CPU halting DISABLED.

CPU cooler = Zigmatek s1283 with Noctua 120mm 19.8 db.

Your doing something wrong.

learn how to overclock properly first before throwing money into pointless upgrades that will see you no perfromance boost.

Thanks for all replies. Yes, I must be making an error somewhere, you must be right. To o/c my "guarranteed to o/c to 3.0ghz" cpu all I initially would need to try is to simply set the fsb from 266 to 333 (think those figures are right). Well, did this once and even with that it still reset iself after around 2 - 3 weeks. Now its only happened once so atm all I've changed is to repeat the above but I'm playing about with the standard / turbo and Extreme setting. I'll see how that goes.

You need to do more research still. Leave it on STANDARD mode... sheesh.

i really wouldnt upgrade to this, i think you maybe doing something wrong, i love my q6600 had it for over a year now and it's never let me down, have had it clocked all the way up to 3.8 at one time only at 3.1 atm only about 8% slower then at 3.4 but about 8 degrees coolers and i dont really notice the performance loss, but then i think i need to reseat my HSF anyways...

back to the topic, i wouldnt upgrade i would check over your overclock and make sure you cooling is good cause it should clock rather well. failing that save more money and go for the I7 thats what i plan to do, though sometime nearer christmas/ next summer when prices drop. if it's not cheap its not worth it cause the q6600 is a rather powerful cpu imho.
