A reminder of why I dislike Vauxhalls

GTFO. Did he test drive it? It's probably in the top 3 worst cars i've driven. Even the passengers hated it.

Two are still in therapy. The third took the easy way out.

I can only sympathise. I had a 1.6 one as a hire car. It was dangerously slow, with just me in. Let alone full of a family and their luggage, which is what people carriers are for, no?

Facepalm, Vauxhall. Facepalm.

Shows how interested in Vauxhalls we are when were all talking abut taps :D

Anyway the cold should be on the right, if it was on the left you would spit toothpaste all over your hand while spitting and rinsing your toothbrush :) ...unless your left handed that is.

Monaro? What does that go up against, M3's? lololol

You missed the key one of there which is the Insignia - which is supposed to be very good, if I'm a good boy I'll get one tommorow so I can find out for myself. The Corsa and Astra are L4D by the Focus and Fiesta, that statement is non negotiable.

I once hired a car to drive to yorkshire for a friend's birthday. They gave me a Vauxhall Zafira.

I still cry about it sometimes.

I nearly binned one of them on the M6 - they don't do the tight bends of Brum at 70 too well :o Terrible terrible car - the seat position was utterly dire, I had to keep stopping it gave me back pains.

Corsa/Astra/Monaro/Zafira are all as good or in some cases better than their class competition now.

Every Vauxhall I've ever been in, or driven, has been pants. I suppose on the upside they don't fall apart every four feet like Renaults but that's not much of a recommendation.

Now Monaro and Zafira might be a wonderful departure from the Vauxhall norm but, somehow, I doubt it.

The Zafira is crap, there's no two ways about it. The Monaro is good, but then it's not really Vauxhall is it? Same story with the VX220

Why are Vauxhalls labelled as "bad". They're just "not that good", that's all. They're not "bad". I've had a couple of recent VX's and plenty of people I know who have them are happy with them. As for bad backs and engines falling out, sounds all far fetched to me.

I'm surprised at just how badly they are thought of, I had an Astra for 18 months, it was better than my Punto and pretty cheap to insure. Granted it was a bit of an average car but in the 18 months I had it I couldn't really fault it. I don't think there was a single day where I drove it and didn't take it up to the red line, but the engine started first time every time. I happily did a 400 mile round trip in a day to Silverstone and back which included 2 hours sat in traffic with the air con on, and it returned 45MPG, me and my passengers didn't have any complaints with it. Sure there's no heated leather seats and climate control and all the nice luxuries, but IMO it was acceptable for spending 4 hours in each way.

I'm fully aware there are far better cars around and it's not the most powerful car in the world, but I knew that when I bought it and it was pretty much exactly what I expected. I'm sure if you're used to BMW/Merc quality then it will seem a lot worse by comparison but I couldn't fault it for what it was. In 18 months, all it cost me was a set of rear tyres (got a puncture) and the oil and a filter for the service which I did myself. Maybe I got lucky? I seem to be in the minority here anyway...

If I was looking to buy a similar car I'd probabaly look at something else just because I could afford to insure something with a bigger engine, but if I ended up with another Astra I wouldn't be too fussed either way.

When I ran out of talent in my 5 Series BMW Assist organised me a hire car until I could get to the dealer to pick up my 3 Series loaner.

It was a Vauxhall Meriva 1.4 Enjoy and it really, truely is the most awful car I have ever driven. It was devoid of ANY merit whatsoever and was SO, SO bad.

I dislike Vauxhalls but this kind of elitist nonsense in pathetic, if you cant drive a 1.0 car and feel safe you shouldn't have a licence due to your own incompetence, let alone a 1.6

Spie had a zaf gsi and he seemed to like it. For a while.

That was about 5 years ago though.

I had a meriva 1.4 as a hire car from Bristol to Newport. It couldn't make it up the hills near Bristol airport in any other gear than first, and they weren't even that steep. :(
