From BBC:
Coyle poised for switch to Celtic
Owen Coyle is wanted by Celtic
Coyle has been offered improved terms to stay with Burnley

Owen Coyle is expected to be the new Celtic manager by the end of the week.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has spoken to the 42-year-old, who has taken Burnley to the Premier League in his first full season in charge.

The Lancashire club are anxious to keep the former St Johnstone boss and have offered Coyle a contract extension.

And operations director Brendan Flood said he is "100% sure that Owen Coyle will lead Burnley in to their first season in the top flight in 33 years."

Paisley-born Coyle, a boyhood Celtic supporter, has two years of his current deal to run at Turf Moor.

He joined Burnley in November 2007, a few days before St Johnstone won the SFL Challenge Cup final against Dunfermline.

The former Bolton, Dundee United, Motherwell and Falkirk striker took the helm at McDiarmid Park in April 2005, finishing second in the First Division.

The Perth club, who recorded a surprise 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox that season, also reached the semi-final stage of both domestic cup competitions, losing to the eventual winners on both occasions.

Celtic are looking for a new manager after Gordon Strachan stepped down on Monday.

And leading scorer Scott McDonald is an admirer of what Coyle has achieved in his short time at Burnley.

"He's done a fantastic job," McDonald said of Coyle, whose squad includes Steven Caldwell, the brother of Celtic defender Gary.

"We've kept a close eye on Burnley this year as well because Gaz Caldwell's brother plays for them, so we've been hearing about Burnley for the last 12 months.

"We've seen a lot of them on TV and they've played some great stuff at times.

"It's not for me to comment on who's going to be the next manager - it's not my decision. I'll just be happy to pull on the Hoops again next year and work as hard as I can for whoever that is."

Scottish football is rubbish. He would be mad to go to Celtic now IMO.

As a Celtic fan I'd be completely underwhelmed with Coyle being appointed.

I think Celtic have a real problem though, they are hardly going to attract the best managers are they ? It's not much of a challenge to manage one of the old firm as they are always going to finish 1st or 2nd.

Coyle would be good for you I think but like I said, he's better off where he is for this season anyway.

Chance to manage in the EPL with a fat transfer budget. I'd have expected him to stay for one year to say he had a go. He will probably end up at parkhead though as he is a Celtic fan.

finish 1st or 2nd.
Finishing 2nd though isn't acceptable to either Celtic or Rangers so it is a challenge, not only that it's an intense pressure cooker. As for a stepping stone to an even bigger club, Celtic or Burnley?

Celtic every time to be honest.

That's the thing though, 2nd place is not considered a successful season in the eyes of the OF. Add that to their expectations in progressing through the group stages of the Champions League and it is a tough job. He's also got a history with Celtic. Ah jokester already covered my next bit as well:

Yep, Burnley play in Europe every year don't they? When was the last time Burnley beat AC Milan or Manchester United? Scottish clubs can be a potent force when properly managed as many of Europe's biggest names can testify. Celtic or Burnley isn't even a fair comparison, Celtic will win every time.

I would find the SPL boring from the point of playing teams 4 times a season, aside from that quality is alright enough.

At Celtic you get 60,000 fans, few games in Europe as well obviously.

I think managing a club trying to finish 17th in the Premiership would be a bit boring. No offence to Burnley or the Premiership, just think the Premiership is over-rated and flooded with money instead of great football and only so much a manager can compete with the budgets of clubs above them.

Obviously at the top of it is arguably the best in the world.

I would imagine Roy Keane would have been their man, but it looks like Marcus Evans/Simon Clegg were shrewd in sacking Jim Magilton before the end of the season and getting him in to Ipswich before the summer.

Obviously you cannot compare Celtic to Burnley in the current climate although Burnley do have a reasonable history.

It is the leagues they play in which matter as far as im concerned .... crappy scottish league or chance to manage in the best league in the world ?

Yes im aware he is a Celtic fan and because of that he will probably go, if i was offered the Celtic job or a chance to manage in the Prem I would choose the Prem.

Didn't the best team in the so called best league just get pawned tonight? If the English Premiership is so good then why do Celtic have such a good record against EPL teams when playing in Europe?

If I was offered the Celtic job or a chance to manage in the Prem I would choose the Prem.

But you are not a Celtic supporter and do not realise how passionate we are about our club. Once a Celt, always a Celt.

Agreed, let him test his mettle in the EPL. I also don't want to see Mowbray or McGhee. Personally i would like to see Moyes but that will never happen. Slaven Bilic should be considered. Especially now he's said let's talk. Craig Levein would get my Scottish vote.

I'm growing tired of the same list of ex Celtic players being banded about all the time and i know it's just to please certain sections of the fans but broaden the horizons please!!!

:)

I'd hope after the wonderful job he has done with Burnley, Coyle would have more ambition than moving to the SPL.

Looks like he is distancing himself from the job. Think its too big a job for him this early in his career.
