Porsche 996 turbo - 0-100mph in 9.2 secs
Mazda MX5 1.8i - 0-100mph in 24.2 secs

I can imagine it was a pretty close one...

:D

Though mine did 60 in 5.1 I can't remember what it did 100 in... but it wasn't slow, however it would have still been shown a clean pair of heels!

However I agree that throwing an MX5 around a twisting country road is a lot easier than a big db9 - though it's still good fun to keep up with one nonetheless, if anything for the noise!

Hell, the 5 even has a higher power / weight ratio... just!

450 bhp / 1770 kg = 254 bhp / tonne
250 bhp / ~980 kg? = 255 bhp / tonne

Add in the weight of a driver to both, and the extra weight of your turbo set-up and the DB9 would be in front. The later DB9's have 470bhp as well, but if it had a private plate it might be hard to tell. Then you have power delivery, a big V12 is going to pull hard from almost nothing, you need to keep a turbo on the boil.

I don't doubt that your MX5 is a quick car, but I think you underestimate how easy it is to "keep up" with quicker cars compared to getting away from slower ones.

There only peak figures anyway, that V12 would give a far better real world spread with less deviation from its peak than a turbo 1.8.

Just because he had a fast, expensive car, doesn't mean he's going to be a better driver, and have more balls, than anyone else. Congratulations though, I guess.

i can completely beleive this. i was at thruxton a couple months back in a cayman, id exited one corner and asked the instructor if he wanted me to pass the mx5 ahead

his words were along the lines of "youll be luck"

the cayman was flat through 3rd and 4th and gained a couple inches

Clearly you have never been on an early morning hoon with a group of enthusiasts.

I have a standard 1.8 mx5 and on a sunday morning run have regularly kept up with a

Porsche 911 Turbo 996
TVR's of all kinds
Nissan 350Z's
BMW M3's

How have I done this? Keeping up is ridiculously easy on country roads when you are following, I don't think that your turbo has done anything for you against a DB9 on anything but the straights.

Have to add a couple of cars to the hit list........

Evo 4 - Smoked like he was going backwards
996 Turbo Cab - Had a few pulls with this and chatted to the guy afterwards and he gave me a spin. This thing pulls like mine low down, but just doesn't stop. The power delivery seems relentless, and where the 5 would be slowing down around 100 this thing kept pulling like a train. He was definitely faster but not hugely noticeable until silly speeds. He pulled 2-3 car lengths from 30 to around 110 leptons.
Techart Magnum!! - I've never seen one on the road before, but had a play and from around 50 to 100 leptons I'd pulled a car length or so.

Any of you guys with an old MX5, turbo it, lol.

And still not a single car anyone sane would take a Mk1 MX5 over. Why is it that people with old quick cars are on a constant crusade to tell the world how they are almost as fast as proper supercars? I always wonder who they are really trying to convince...

Give me a break :/ Not hugely noticeable? A 911 Turbo is one of the fastest point to point cars on the planet.

OCUK will never ever understand this fact about engine characteristics. On OCUK peak output and power to weight are all that matter.

Up to 100mph i can well belive a 250bhp mx-5 will give a 911 turbo a run for its money, it won't be quite as fast but the 911 won't be pulling away quite as much as expected.

Dont forget 0-60.

mk1_salami - you smoked an Evo like he was going backwards? He must have really not been trying then.

I've never once said my car is better than any of the other cars mentioned. This is a motors forum, and I like to hear how cars compare to each other.

If you find certain claims hard to believe - because of the humble base car - thats understandable, but doesn't make them nonsense. Whats hard to believe about a 276bhp heavier car with AWD transmission losses being smoked by a short geared car with 300kg less weight and only 25bhp down?

Forgot to add, here is a pic of the magnum. I should really put this in the spotted thread. A beast of a car with huge road presence

Techart Magnum

Sure thing. All I've got a video of is a 4th gear pull from 20mph to IIRC about 110mph, but I'll try to get out and get one. Its hard because I don't have a decent camcorder or mount for one, so its terrible quality phone vids.

I find it hard to believe that you smoked him like he was going backwards, Im not denying your car is quite rapid though.

..SNIP LOAD OF TOSH

Your post implied (condescendingly) that you regularly keep up with 996s, M3s and the like. A fact several people pointed out. If you are now trying to backtrack then good luck, but you will end up in a Yantorsen sized hole where you will be telling us there was a black hole anomaly and your car was magically given a huge boost of power. Possibly.
