Bell Insurance Cancellation/Refund Help

I recently cancelled a policy with Bell as I had purchased a car in the middle of the policy and started a new policy with Churchill.

It was a 10 month Bell policy that I paid £300 outright. 5 months into that policy I upgraded my car and Bell proceeded to take a further £325.

A week later I cancelled, with a £50 fee, and started a new policy with Churchill.

A few days later I was refunded with £258.85, which I'm unsure how they've worked out. The customer sales adviser mentioned it was pro-rata'd. I think they achieved this by (£625 / 10 months) * 5 months - £50 canc. fee.

Another way I looked at it was:

half of £300 outright = £150 (having used half of the policy)
+£325 (additional premium due to change of car)
-£50 cancellation fee
totals £425

Obviously there's a large difference between these sums and I feel the pro-rate calculation is more than likely the correct solution in this case, but I can't help but think and question the second method of working it out.

Just looking for opinions and thoughts from people on this, anyone from an insurance company in particular that can help out?

Thanks for the suggestion. I phoned them just before I posted this thread, and the guy on the other end could not understand.

Surely the way they have worked it out means that I am paying (or have indeed paid) a higher rate for my old car during the first 5 months and this should be incorrect?

I will phone them again tomorrow and if there's no joy I shall send a letter in. Also is there an insurance regulator that I can contact should I need to?

Just spent 45 mins on the phone to them explaining in clear terms that they had miscalculated it. The customer service guy still stuck to his guns so I asked to speak to a supervisor or manager. 5 mins later and he's admitted that there has been a mistake and will phone me back soon after he works it out again.

I also received a letter from Churchill today stating that they have contacted Bell to clarify my 2yrs NCB and Bell told them that my old policy with them was still in force  even though I cancelled that policy 3 weeks ago as well as returning policy papers. It means I now have to get a letter from Bell stating my NCB and cancellation of the previous policy.

Never had any problems with Bell at all until I wanted to leave them. I don't think I'll ever return to them. Just constant hassle through no fault of my own.

Bell could offer the worst customer service on the planet and I still wouldn't care less because they're the only insurance company to offer realistic prices to young drivers.

Their prices are mad (low) for me, so yeah, agreed. :(

Hence why I was with them, they consistently beat other companies quotes for me (a young driver) until now as Churchill are cheaper.

Anyhow, received a call back from Bell. Apparently it was a system error/failure that miscalculated the refund and they will refund an extra £160 on top of the £260 that they have already paid. So £420.

Win.

Glad you got it sorted mate.

As a 20 year old driver I spent all bloody day doing quotes and Bell were still miles, and I mean absolutely miles, cheaper than anyone else.
