Hi folks ,currently running a Q6600 @3.5 with this board and am wondering if I might clock higher if I move to a P45 or X48 board. Any of you got useful suggestions? Any upgrade would be based around the Q6600 for time being.

Thanks

PC Specs Q6600 @ 3.5 Cooled with Apogee, 4GB DDR 2 OCZ Reaper 9200 ,on ASUS P5K Premium wifi AP, ATI 4870 1GB

What volts are you on at that clock? I'm on a P45 here and struggled to get past 3.2, not sure what your mileage would be though as yours seems to be a better clocker.

I had the P5K-E Deluxe a while back, nice board and it should be able to clock your Quad a bit higher than 3.4GHz if the chip is willing?

The Intel® P35 Express Chipset is still pretty capable of big clocks so I would think carefully before upgrading as it may be your CPU or other component/setting that is holding you back?

The Intel® P45 Express Chipset is definately a better chipset though thanks to its tunable GTL settings and lower voltage requirements so their is some merit in paying out a small amount of money to swap-out the P35 for P45 to see if it helps! . . . plenty of used boards floating about for little money!

I'm guessing the upgrade idea is not all about performance but a low cost bit of kit that your half familiar with to sit and tweak! :)

Seems like a pointless upgrade to me. 3.4 to 3.8GHz is where most Q6600's top out, so you may already be limited by the chip. Even if your mobo is the limiting factor gains will be very small.

Agree'd, it'll be the CPU topping out.

My Q6600 clocks no higher in my X38 than it did in my P35.

Only reason to change to P45/X48 from a P35 is for Crossfire.

Thanks people. My volts are on auto apart from Dram which is 2.1. I have had brief stability at 3.7 ghz but it doesnt really count. 3.5 is very stable. ive had little luck with voltage tweaking on this board aand thought i might have more scope on a p45 or x48
I may wait till i can afford x58 and i7.

Have just moved from P35 board to a P45 board (the P35 failed) - as yet does not feel or appear to be anything other than marginally, if at all, faster.

Better crossfire I read - I do not run it myself so of no benefit to me (not yet anyway)

Overall I would consider this a sideways move.

P.S. I've only had the new board for a week and have not yet tried all the new extras it has NOR am I in a position to say wether the new will be as good as /better / worse at clocking than the old.

Lot of fun finding out tho :D

P45 if you are on a tight budget and don't care too much about crossfire or runiing one GPU x48 if you do care :P

X48 mobos are better for 45nm quads ? (correct if I m wrong) saying that all older platform mobos are cheap now
