Anyone that's been to or obviously from Glasgow, have you ever noticed that persistent smell that lurks around the entire city? I use to think it was a bakery or somesuch but my other half seems convinced it's a brewery of some kind. It's a smell I remember even from visiting Glasgow in my childhood.

Perhaps others could but I find the smell completely indescribable, therefore I won't even attempt it but hopefully someone will know what I'm on about? What is it exactly?

After the rangers game in Manchester i walked through Piccadilly Gardens the following morning and it reaked of cider, everything was cleaned up too :D
ITS THE SOIL

I wasn't sure if it was, I've no idea what a brewery smells like - Just a suggestion from the mrs who again, has no idea what a brewery smells like!

It's quite a distinctive smell but I don't know how to describe it, kind of like barley and hops boiling? There used to be a few in the west end of Edinburgh, so the area around Lothian Road would stink if the wind was strong enough.

I remember this from when I was young too, although not everywhere, I'm sure it was somewhere near the Barras market but I don't remember exactly... this was about 15-20 years ago mind XD

Anyway, it was definately a brewery. I know coz my dad told me :p

The Youngs brewery in London (RIP :() used to smell a bit of hops and malt. I remember the smell well.

Used to be a brewery in romford and that smelt, and where you went the smell was there could not escape from it.

Its a smell that once smelt you don't forget it. Must admit i don't miss it either.

its the Tennants Lager Brewery in the East end of Glasgow. You can smell it more in the summer months depending on weather conditions etc..

The Caledonian Brewery along Slateford Road is still going, sometimes smells very strongly along there and into Gorgie/Dalry. Quite a few people complain about it but I find it's quite a nice smell when it isn't completely overpowering.

Always had that smell from the Brains brewery in Cardiff city centre every morning. Not so strong since the brewery move, the only place you can really smell it now is central station. Always made want a pint of Brains Dark whenever I got the whiff in my nose.

The smell changes, but often has a resemblance to marmite. Its a yeasty hoppy kind of smell.

Strangely enough i have always noticed this too, never thought anything of it tho, thought it was just my nasal receptors after years of sniffing stupid stuff as a kid
